How to Use a Cigar Knife: Step by Step Process

Cigars and cigar smoking is the kind of hobby you would assume that your dad, uncle, or grandfather would partake in. Something that older men tend to enjoy rather than younger people. While that may be true for some folks, cigar smoking can be for everyone who is interested in the craft, taste, and beauty that are cigars.

When it comes to cigars though, they aren’t like other tobacco products. Cigars are handcrafted items that are meant to be enjoyed, savored, and tasted, not quickly rushed in between work breaks or outside of a party in the cold. Like many other things like coins, plush dolls, or even cars, cigars are often collected. With the correct storage, cigars can be preserved for long periods of time, making it easy and generally accessibly to collect your favorite cigars.

So, when you find the time to smoke one of your favorite cigars, either to help you wind down, celebrate a special occasion, or just because you feel like it, then the right preparations need to be done in order to make the most out of your cigar smoking session.

One of the most important ways to ensure you have a good smoking session with your cigar is to cut it correctly. This can be done simply with a cigar knife or other type of cigar cutter. At first, it may seem like a complicated process that requires focus and precision, but it actually can be quite easy with the correct tools.

How to Use a Cigar Knife
Before going gung ho and cutting your cigar with a regular kitchen knife, there are ways that will make this process easier, with the help of an actual cigar cutter. There are a lot of different kinds of cigar cutters, such as a blade guillotine, cigar scissors, cigar punch, v-cutter, and a cigar piercer to name a few.

There really isn’t a “correct” one to choose from, it’s all about personal preference. But each type of cigar cutter has its own unique way of cutting or punching out the cigar, so if you like a clean straight cut on your cigar, then go with something like a cigar scissor or a cigar knife, but if you prefer a punch cut, than a cigar punch may be more suited to your needs.

Once you’ve gotten the right cigar cutter picked out, then it’s time to prepare the cigar to be cut. Cigars are very meticulously rolled together, so before cutting, make sure you pinpoint the cap at the end of the cigar and the flag. Make sure to leave some flag leaf and glue in tact, so when you cut into the cigar, it doesn’t unravel and ruin it.

Next, you want to slightly moisten the tip of the cigar so the leaves don’t rip or tear when it’s getting cut into. Typically, the moisture from the inside of your lips can do the trick. It doesn’t need to be submerged in water or anything. Any slight moisture will prevent the cigar from being ruined.

If you’re using something like a cigar knife, then a straight cut is the easiest and most common way to do it. The cut should be decisive and quick, like ripping off a bandaid. Do it with confidence. Once you’ve made your cut, you’re ready to start enjoying your cigar!
