Troubleshooting Kohler Flush Valves

If your facility has a modern Kohler flush valve toilet, you should know that it uses a unique flush valve AquaPiston canister technology. Kohler’s canister flush valve is a flapper-less flush valve that features a rubber seal at the bottom.

The canister has a simple mechanism and is available in both one-piece and two-piece Cimmaron versions.

How Do Kohler Toilet Flush Valves Work?
In the canister, a cylindrical overflow tube is positioned vertically. When the tower is lifted vertically, the valve will open and allow water to flow freely down the bowl in all directions.

So whenever the flush lever is pushed, the chain attached directly to the canister tube will lift the valve, and water will flow into the bowl in a 360-degree gravity-fed spin.

How to Adjust These Flush Valves?
Kohler toilet flush valves are adjusted by turning the screw on the top of the valve. Turn the adjustment screw clockwise to raise the water level and counterclockwise to drop the water level. The water level in the tank must always be below the overflow tube.

How to Fix a Running Kohler Toilet?
The most common cause of a running Kohler toilet is a faulty flush valve seal. The problem might be resolved by replacing or cleaning the seal. A malfunctioning fill valve filling the tank with water continuously can also sometimes be the cause of a running Kohler toilet.

The water level in a Kohler’s tank is regulated by an adjustable float. If the float is fixed too low, you’ll have a weak flush volume, if it’s fixed too high, your water will get to the overflow tube and the fill valve will not close. To stop the toilet from running, simply adjust the float until the water turns off at the correct level.

To make sure your toilet isn’t running anymore, put some food color in the tank. If you see colored water in the bowl, your toilet is still running. If you don’t see the food color, even after about 30 minutes, your toilet has stopped running.

What to Do When There Is a Hissing Noise?
If your Kohler toilet is hissing, especially after flushing, it is most likely due to a faulty fill valve. Mineral deposits may have obstructed the fill valve opening, causing the water to force its way through, resulting in a hissing sound. The problem could be resolved by replacing the fill valve.

How to Replace the Flapper Seal?
A Kohler toilet flapper is a cylindrical canister that raises completely up to allow water to flow freely into the bowl from all sides. To remove it, turn off the toilet’s water supply, rotate it a quarter-turn counterclockwise, and lift it off. To replace it, align the guide with the base and turn it a quarter in a clockwise direction.

Turn the water supply on and check if there is no leak.
