Cayman Brac and the island of Little Cayman are called the Sister Islands to Grand Cayman. They are only about 5 miles away from each other, and together offer a more laid-back, less developed feel.

If you visit, make sure you don’t miss the following six gems on Cayman Brac.

1. Explore the MV Captain Keith Tibbetts Wreck
A mere 200 yards off Cayman Brac’s north shore rests the MV Captain Keith Tibbetts, a 330-foot Russian frigate that was scuttled in 1996 to create an artificial reef.

The wreck is a stone’s throw from shore, easily accessible, and lies in shallow water. The wreck’s waters, between two coral reefs, abound with turtles, grouper, scorpionfish, angelfish, eels, and other beautiful marine life.

2. Cayman Brac Caves
Cayman Brac features numerous littoral cave formations that form along the limestone shoreline, in which visitors can observe natural wonders including marvelous stalactite and stalagmite structures.

There are over 100 caves on Cayman Brac’s north shore alone, a few of which, such as Bat Cave, Skull Cave and Peter’s Cave, are open to visitors.

3. Visit the Parrot Preserve
Cayman Brac is home to over 200 species of resident avian life and is a true birder’s paradise. Noteworthy species include the West Indian Whistling Duck, Banaquit, and Brown Booby – among innumerable others.

Cayman Brac is also home to a Parrot Preserve, where visitors have the chance to see or hear the beautiful Cayman Brac Parrot, a little iridescent green parrot with red cheeks.

This parrot which once occupied both Little Cayman and Cayman Brac can now be found nowhere else in the world – so the Parrot Preserve is a must-see attraction!

4. The Cayman Brac Museum
The Cayman Brac Museum, at 279 Stake Bay Road, is the oldest museum in the Cayman Islands and maintains a plethora of unique exhibits on turtling, ship-building, and other industries endemic to the Cayman Islands.

5. Visit the Heritage House
The Cayman Brac Heritage House is a classic, preserved Caymanian home, featuring numerous sights and scenes. The best part – admission is free.

Visitors to the Heritage House will be able to immerse themselves in the Caymanian culture of yesteryear, learn more about native and introduced flora, and interact with numerous historic, cultural, and artistic programs and exhibits.

6. See the Bluff
Last but certainly not least, no trip to Cayman Brac could possibly be complete without a day exploring the Bluff, after which the island is named.

Indeed, “brac” is a Gaelic name for a “bluff” and it is this staple feature of the landscape that has lent its name to the larger of the two Sisters.
The Bluff, at the eastern end of Cayman Brac, rises nearly 150 feet out of the sea and affords breathtaking views of sea, sand and sky.

The Bluff supports wide tracts of Caymanin dry forest that are inhabited (as hinted above) by over 100 species of birds, including Cuban pigeons, Caribbean Elaenia, warblers, vireos, and many others.
