How To Treat The Secret Symptom Of Menopause

A few years back, Caroline Scott Brown, a resident of Seattle took up hysterectomy resulting in the removal of her ovaries. Narrating her experience after the surgery, she remarked, “Immediately after recovering from the surgery when I found out it was OK for me to start back having sex, I realized that it didn’t feel comfortable.” Brown added, “I was dry as a bone. It was awful. I was actually irritated just from touching my underwear, and I was avoiding sex.”

The condition that Brown was suffering from is known as atrophic vaginitis, the issue showing up with dryness and delicateness in the vagina. This is usually caused by the decline in the production of female hormone estrogen according to Andrew Kaunitz, MD. Estrogen secretion generally lowers around the time of menopause. This might happen temporarily while nursing a baby. Estrogen is also found to drop off suddenly following some surgeries like the one that Brown had. This happens due to the removal of ovaries which have the glands that produce estrogen.

The secret syndrome of menopause
During menopause, some women might face quite serious issues which they might not feel comfortable to disclose to others. In fact, the changes women face during such times are quite evident, explains Gloria Bachmann, MD, who is the associate dean for women’s health at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, New Brunswick, N.J.

She says, “One of the first signs one sees on pelvic examination is that the vaginal area is very dry, it’s very pale, and it loses the wrinkling that most young women have. As it progresses, the vaginal area gets thinner and smoother, and it easily bleeds. … The degree of it is sometimes variable. A 50-year-old who comes in today to see me may have horrible symptoms, whereas another 50-year-old may not be at that point and may still have some lubrication.”

The changes explained above can result in a condition known as atrophic vaginitis. According to Kaunitz, professor and assistant chairman of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Florida Health Science Center in Jacksonville and director of menopausal services for the University of Florida Medical Women’s Center, this is a very important cause of female sexual dysfunction, which is not discussed frequently.
