Do You Need a Compensator for Your Glock?

Simple as the platforms are, many Glock owners take a lot of pride in personalizing and upgrading your handguns.

Perhaps it is expressly because of how simplistic and plain Glocks are from the factory. These things don’t even have safeties.

And, on that note, one of the best upgrades nearly any shooter can make is with a compensator for a Glock. Here’s what to know.

Hold Up: What’s a Compensator?

A compensator, also known as a comp (and called a muzzle brake when mounted to a rifle), is a muzzle device that redistributes gasses vented at the muzzle with the intended effect of reducing felt recoil.

And a good comp can, in some cases, reduce felt recoil by close to 50% without adversely affecting shot power.

If your Glock has a threaded barrel, a compensator can be added without making any other modifications.

It sounds like the benefits are self-evident and they might be. So here are some things to look for to determine if a compensator for your Glock represents a serviceable upgrade.

You Might Need a Compensator for Your Glock If…

  • You flinch or have other bad habits. If you’re trying to break bad habits at the range, you should take everything you can get in the way of recoil reduction.
  • You’re recoil shy and get tired at the range. Some people are more resilient in the face of recoil than others, no shame in that.
  • You’re a new shooter. Recoil is just one more thing we need to learn to deal with. If you’re just learning handling and gun safety, a comp can eliminate the roadblock produced by recoil.
  • You compete and need to be able to make faster, more accurate follow up shots. The reduction in muzzle jump that a compensator offers is no small proposition, and can help you shoot more quickly – and more accurately.
  • You shoot a Glock 20. The G20, chambered in 10mm, produces what can only be called punishing recoil. A compensator for a G20 can help bring back recoil down to manageable levels.

When to Pass on the Comp

At the same time, while a compensator for your Glock can represent incredible value, there are some conditions according to which you might want to pass:

  • If you need a very small footprint for concealed carry. Don’t take this the wrong way, a Glock with a compensator can still be concealed, it’s just that the muzzle device will inherently expand the footprint of the platform.
  • If you’re not fazed by recoil. If you don’t have a problem with recoil, then a compensator is just another thing to buy.
