About Demon Slayer Rengoku’s Sword

In Demon Slayer, Kyojuro Rengoku is among the most fearsome of all the Demon Slayer Corps and is best known as the Flame Hashira, or “fire breathing” Hashira, reflected by his fiery red-and-yellow appearance.

He was also one of the most skilled and accomplished swordsmen of the entire corps, renowned for his adherence to the bushido style as well as for his flame-breathing style. It’s fitting that Rengoku’s sword bears the same fiery aesthetic and capabilities. Here’s what to know.

A Sword with the Power of Fire

Like other Nichirin To (Nichirin swords), Rengoku’s sword was forged from Scarlet Crimson Iron Sands (Shojohi Satetsu) and Scarlet Ore (Shojohi Koseki). These iron sands were found only high on mountains where they were exposed to sunlight all year round. From the sunlight they absorbed and distilled their special powers, yielding the only blades that were capable of killing demons.

Kyojuro Rengoku’s constant companion was a Nichirin katana with a flame-patterned blade and tsuba. The blade itself was a dark, nearly-black color with a deep red flame pattern along the edge, similarly to where the hamon line of a real katana would lie. The blade was also inscribed along both sides of the blade with the characters “Akki Messatsu”, or “Destroyer of Demons”.

In keeping with the flame aesthetic, Rengoku’s sword features a flame-inspired tsuba with a red and yellow pattern. The tsuka of his sword was wrapped in white silk and was capped with a flame-orange colored hashira (what would be the pommel of a Japanese sword). The saya of Rengoku’s sword was white with gray accents.

Rengoku’s First Form, Unknowing Fire, enables him to effectively wield this sword in a quick rush at his adversary with the intention of delivering a decapitating blow, but perhaps most impressive is his Fifth Form, Flame Tiger, in which he delivers a flurry of slashing attacks that manifest the likeness of a flaming tiger, hence the name.

His Ninth Form, eponymously named Rengoku, is perhaps the most powerful. In the Ninth Form, Rengoku adopts a high stance and charges rapidly at his opponent, delivering a single slash with his sword. This single offensive maneuver is so powerful that it can carve out a channel in the ground as the attacker proceeds.

It’s also fitting for Rengoku and his sword as, when he advances in this form, he appears as a flaming dragon striking towards the target.
