Common Types of Grinding Abrasives

Grinding abrasives are compounds that are used to remove material from a workpiece, and are often used on grinding wheels and flap disks, among other tools. They can be used on metal, wood, plastic, masonry, or some other material.

Grinding abrasives can be used on a wide variety of different tools, such as sandpaper, grinding wheels, cutoff wheels, and even flapwheels. However, the type of abrasive used should be matched to the intended application and use case.

There are many different types of grinding abrasives, moreover, that are used for the attributes they deliver. Some of them are preferred for grinding ferrous materials whereas others for grinding nonferrous materials. This short post will cover some of the more common ones.

Aluminum Oxide

Aluminum oxide is one of the most common grinding abrasives out there and is the one most commonly encountered in most grades and grits of sandpaper.

Aluminum oxide grains are sharp and offer a fast initial cut. This makes them effective for grinding ferrous and nonferrous metals like steel, iron, and even brass and bronze.

It is also a relatively cost-effective grinding abrasive. The drawback is that the grains dull over time and the abrasive loses its grinding efficiency the longer it is used.

Zirconia Alumina

Zirconia alumina is a mix of aluminum oxide and zirconium oxide and is best used for rough grinding applications wherein a large amount of stock material needs to be removed in a short amount of time.

The grains are also self-sharpening, which makes them long-lasting and gives them an advantage over aluminum oxide.

There is also a premium type of zirconia alumina, which is blended with ceramic alumina, which offers faster, more efficient cutting.

Silicon Carbide

Silicon carbide grains are extremely hard and sharp, and can offer fast, efficient cutting. This grinding abrasive material is, however, somewhat brittle, so despite the fact that it cuts quickly and efficiently, it doesn’t last as long as tougher alternatives like aluminum oxide.

Also, silicon carbide as a grinding abrasive is used on a wide range of materials. In addition to both ferrous and nonferrous metals, because of its hardness it is often selected for grinding glass, stone, and sometimes even plastic and rubber compounds.

Ceramic Aluminum Oxide

Ceramic aluminum oxide is a premium grinding abrasive not only because it is sharp and hard, and thereby effective at removing workpiece material, but because as it is used, the grains fracture and form new cutting surfaces. For lack of a better description, ceramic aluminum oxide is “self sharpening”.

So whereas some grinding abrasives like aluminum oxide get less effective over time, ceramic aluminum oxide maintains itself.
