Why an OTF Double-Action Automatic Stiletto Is the Move (and Better Than an Assisted Opener)

Stiletto knives have needle point profiles and are perfect for piercing and puncturing tasks, as well as detail work. It also just so happens that an automatic stiletto, specifically an OTF double-action automatic stiletto, offers more value than an assisted opener. Let’s take a closer look at why this is.

First, an assisted opener stiletto knife requires you to open the blade part of the way before it takes over. That’s strike number one. An automatic stiletto, double action or not, will deploy the blade completely with the push of a button.

Second, a double action automatic stiletto will not just deploy the blade with the push of a button. It will also retract it. This means you can deploy and safely stow the knife, all with one hand. And, on top of that, the learning curve is short.

Automatic knives of all sorts, not just stilettos, are more fidget friendly as well, than assisted openers are. They’re just more fun to play with. And they look cooler, too.

On top of that, it’s easier for most users to learn how to use an automatic knife, and to get proficient with it. You don’t need any special skills to be able to deploy one, or in the case of a double action knife, to retract it. You basically just push a button and the knife does the rest.

As for an OTF automatic stiletto, there are a few reasons that one of these will perform a conventional out-the-side, or OTS stiletto, too, but we’ll just focus on the big one: safety.

OTS folders have all sorts of locks, but regardless of what lock type they use, they function via the action of a pivot system that enables the blade to fold and close into the handle of the knife. Regardless of what lock type they use, if the lock fails while you’re using the knife, that’s bad news for what should be very obvious reasons that should need no explanation here.

OTF knives have lock types, but the configuration of the knife is completely and fundamentally different from an out the side folder. The blade exits and withdraws into the knife handle in a linear fashion, lock or not.

So, in the event that the lock of an OTF automatic stiletto does fail, the blade shouldn’t fold on your hand or fingers. At least that is highly infeasible and incredibly unlikely. In this respect, the OTF automatic stiletto has the edge on the OTS folder, or any OTS folder, for that matter, for safety, too.

And then, of course, there is the fact that an OTF knife is just so much better on cool factor than an OTS knife is. They also don’t generate any rotational momentum and some OTF knives deploy a fraction more quickly than OTS folders as well.

All of this being said, to summarize, a double action OTF automatic stiletto will be faster, safer, more fidget friendly, and more practical to use since you can deploy and retract the blade completely with one hand.
