Many Kershaw knives are made with low-maintenance handle scale materials and relatively rust-resistant blade steel alloys, but that doesn’t mean you can neglect routine knife care. This short post will tell you most of what you need to know.
Cleaning and Oiling
Cleaning and oiling are the most straightforward aspects of maintenance for most Kershaw knives and, all things considered, the most important ones, too.
After using the knife, wipe away any residue or debris that remains behind on the blade. Periodically use a toothpick to remove any lint or grime from the pivot mechanism or between the scales. Compressed air can be used for this as well.
If necessary, rinse the blade with warm water and a light detergent; use a clean cloth to remove any stubborn residue or dirt.
After cleaning, thoroughly dry the knife. This is critical as many Kershaw knives are made with steels that have a high carbon content and despite the fact that many are corrosion resistant, if they are left wet they will rust.
After drying the knife, lubricate the pivot mechanism and oil the blade. You can use many different types of household oils for this, but Kershaw recommends WD-40, 3-in-1 oil, gun oil, or even Kershaw Knife Oil. Oiling will not only keep the knife operating properly, it will also insulate it against corrosion.
Removing Light Rust
If you do get any light spots of rust on your Kershaw knife, dealing with that should be easy and straightforward enough. Kershaw recommends light treatments like Flitz metal polish to remove it, as well as a light abrasive. Fine steel wool can be a good option here as well. If there is more than just a light spot of rust, try something more aggressive to dissolve and remove it, like WD-40.
Tightening Hardware
Most Kershaw knives are folders that are held together with Torx fasteners. In the vast majority of cases, the fastener is either a T6 or T8 Torx screw. Do not use an Allen wrench as these will strip the heads of the fasteners.
Periodically tighten all hardware on your Kershaw knives as if you let them continue to walk loose, you will eventually lose the hardware.
Keeping Your Kershaw Knives Sharp
Lastly, a sharp knife is a safe knife because it lets you use less force when you are working with it, which results in a lower chance of slipping, and thereby a lower chance of injury.
Kershaw knives are covered by free lifetime sharpening, so either send your knives into their facility in Oregon for sharpening or do so yourself at home; most knives are sharpened at an angle between 18° and 22°.
