Accuracy International sniper rifles deliver some of the most uncompromising performance in the industry for extreme long-range rifles, or ELR rifles.
With that said, many of them are chambered around cartridges like .300 Norma Magnum and .338 Lapua. These are excellent cartridges especially for extreme long-range shooting, but there are occasions in which shooters won’t need all that bullet.
Case in point: the Accuracy International AX308, which delivers all of the performance of Accuracy International sniper rifles like those in the AXSR line, but which is built around a much more accessible cartridge. Here’s what you should know.
- An approachable chambering. One of the great things about the Accuracy International AX308 rifle is the chambering. This is a much more affordable, accessible cartridge than most that are used for ELR shooting; most gun shops carry it and on top of that, it produces relatively little recoil despite the fact that it is more than practical for numerous sporting applications and disciplines, not the least of which is hunting.
- Engineered for accuracy at extreme ranges. The AX308 comes with a match-grade barrel and a 1:10 twist rate that is ideal for the .308 Winchester around which it is engineered.
- Reasonable weight. The AX308, unlike many ELR rifles, isn’t 20 or even 30 pounds, or close to it. It’s just 13.5 pounds, which is more than enough to help control recoil despite being light enough to port it in the backcountry, if you needed a hunting rifle that could connect at extended ranges.
- A surprisingly modular and versatile design that is highly stable. The AX308 sports a side-folding, locking stock, making it easier both to transport and to carry. It also sports a butt spike to stabilize the platform when shooting.
- A high degree of adjustability. Like any quality ELR rifle, the AX308 is highly adjustable. In this case, specifically, the rifle has an adjustable cheek piece as well as a butt that is adjustable for length of pull. These can be quick-adjusted in the field as well.
- In addition to its 20 MOA Picatinny rail that is ideal for mounting scopes for ELR shooting, the AX308 also sports a 13” forend tube for mounting other shooting accessories.
- A great trigger. The AX308 is equipped from the factory with an AI adjustable two-stage trigger that’s set at between 3.3 and 4.4 pounds.
- An advanced safety. If you intend to carry your AX308 in the field, you will also appreciate the advanced safety design of this rifle. It sports a 3-position safety. In the first position, the safety not only physically blocks the firing pin but locks the bolt closed. In the second position allows the bolt to be operated, and in the third position, the safety allows the rifle to be fired.
