3 Ways to Speed Up Your AR Reloads

Time is one of the main ways you’re scored in shooting competitions, like 3-gun. While most gunners are looking for ways to shave time off their reloads with their handguns, speed is also a critical factor when running your rifle, too.

This short post will cover 3 helpful and actionable tips for how to speed up your reloads with your AR, which are how you carry your mags along with two upgrades for the rifle: the installation of a magwell along with an AR15 ambidextrous mag release.

Carry Your Magazines in an Accessible Location

Carrying your magazines where you can reach them will set you up for success. They should be inserted into your vest or carrier, top-down, with the baseplate of the mag sticking up.

Magazine pulls, or magpuls, installed on the bottom of the magazine can also make it easier to retrieve them, too.

Make sure the magazines are easy to reach with your non-dominant hand, either on the front of your body or on the side where it is easy to access them when you drop and reload.

Install an AR15 Magwell

Not that it will make a massive difference, but a magazine well, or “magwell” can also help you funnel the mag up and into the mag chute.

Though they are more common on handguns, there are AR15 magwells, which basically serve as a flared base for the magazine chute. This creates a larger target for you to hit, and makes it easier to intuitively guide the magazine up and into the gun.

They’re also relatively easy to install on the rifle, and there’s no learning curve associated with using one. The best case scenario is an AR15 magwell will help you shave a few milliseconds off your reload.

Install an AR15 Ambidextrous Mag Release (or an Extended One)

Lastly, if you’re a southpaw, consider installing an AR15 ambidextrous mag release

, as this will make it easier for you to manipulate controls that are otherwise designed for right-handed operators.

Alternatively, if you don’t need an AR15 ambidextrous mag release, consider installing an extended mag release. An extended mag release will be easier to engage more intuitively and can help you drop the mag more quickly.

The other thing about an extended mag release is that it will be easier to feel and engage when wearing heavy gloves, such as in the cold, or in the dark.

In either case, an ambidextrous or extended mag release can potentially help you drop your spent mags more quickly, and that’s the precursor to a faster reload.
