5 Types of Used Dental Equipment

Among the dental equipment encountered in an office, some of it will hold its value better than others. It’s also important to remember that in all markets, not just the one for used dental equipment, value is a relative term.

It is tied to the features and functions of an item or instrument as well as to its age and depreciation. Initial cost is also therefore a factor.

It should go without saying that there is a great deal of equipment most dentists use regularly. Here are some of the more common ones, among which are some that hold their value fairly well.

Pan/Ceph Machines

Digital panoramic X-ray machines capture 2-dimensional scans of a patient’s anatomy, and ceph machines, which focus on the head, face and neck, constitute a broad class of dental equipment that when properly cared for and serviced, can hold their value well.

In fact, among used dental equipment, panoramic X-ray machines and cephalometric systems are two that tend to hold their value fairly well, even if the asking price of a used system is well below the new list price.

Dental CBCT Machines

Dental CBCT machines, which can easily cost between $50,000 and $100,000 when new (if not more) generally represent the single most expensive item in a dentist’s office.

Fortunately, if they are properly maintained, they also hold their value well. This means they are of value not just to resellers but to potential buyers of used dental equipment

On the one hand, used dental CBCT machines that can effectively do anything a new machine can but at a lower cost are of interest to buyers while giving sellers the opportunity to recover some of the initial investment.

Dental Scanners

While dental scanners are generally significantly less expensive than pan, ceph and CBCT systems, they can still represent an investment of several thousand dollars, if not tens of thousands. This comes on top of costs associated with subscription fees, which are necessary to use the software of some systems.

With that said, when properly cared for, dental scanners, like X-ray systems, will hold their value well. This means there is a strong market for used dental intraoral scanners.

Cavitrons and Autoscalers

Cavitrons, which are used to remove plaque from the teeth, and autoscalers, which remove plaque from the teeth while also cleaning the gums and polishing teeth, are two of the most commonly used pieces of equipment in most dental offices.

Depending on the model and how well it has been cared for, either of these can last 10 to 15 years or longer, and though they do depreciate, there is still a market for this used dental equipment

Other Dental Instruments

Dental instruments, like forceps, probes and mirrors, along with drills and bits, usually have fairly long service lifespans before they need to be repaired or replaced. Also, for the most part, there’s not much depreciation they will experience unless they are intentionally not maintained properly.

Fortunately, the upfront cost to purchase these instruments new is much lower than it is for X-ray equipment and intraoral scanners. While some dental equipment can be recycled, there is still a market for used dental instruments, though it might not be as strong as that market for scanners and X-ray machines that hold their value more effectively.
