About the Sirona Orthophos XG 5: Cleaning and Care

So you’re the proud owner of a Sirona Orthophos XG 5, one of the most robust dental imaging systems in the industry, which is capable of capturing not only traditional panoramic scans, but also bitewings, sinus views, and cephalometric exposures.

But, like all dental X-ray systems, these need proper maintenance, as well as routine disinfection, not just to protect your staff and patients, but to safeguard the value of the investment in the imaging unit itself.

Here are some high-level notes, taken directly from Dentsply Sirona’s owner’s manual for the Sirona Orthophos XG 5.

Disinfection

Per Dentsply Sirona, only the exterior surfaces can be disinfected, and only with an approved disinfectant that complies with the respective national regulatory body responsible for overseeing the implicated virucidal, bactericidal and fungicidal properties of the cleaner.

Use only cleaning agents approved by Dentsply Sirona, such as CaviCide, or CaviWipes. Do not use any cleaners that contain phenol, peracetic acid, peroxide, sodium hypochlorite, or any iodine-splitting or oxygen-splitting agents.

Sterilization should also be performed to protect your patients and staff against the risk of transmissible diseases. Accessories that may be sterilized should be sterilized in an autoclave at 270℉, with at least 4 minutes of holding time at an overpressure of 2.1 bar. For a list of accessories that can be sterilized see your owner’s manual. Also, remember to discard your single-use hygienic sleeves between patients.

Cleaning

In addition to interpatient sterilization, your Sirona Orthophos XG 5 should also be cleaned periodically to remove grime, dirt, and residue leftover from any disinfection agents.

Do not spray any cleaning agents into ventilation slots, or onto the release button; apply the cleaning agent first to a rag, then apply it to the machine.

Inspection, Maintenance, and Checking Image Quality

At least once per year, you should inspect or have your Sirona Orthophos XG 5 inspected by a qualified technician to ensure proper operability. In addition, preventive maintenance should be administered after 4 years, 7 years, 10 years, and then at 2 year intervals every year thereafter.

The image quality should also be assessed, at least once per year, at minimum to inspect for the degree of postprocessing, to ensure that the brightness and contrast of the exposure is suitable.
