Camo Cargo Shorts: Yes, They Still Got It

Got a pair of camo cargo shorts in the closet you just haven’t worn in ages?

Thinking about buying a pair but nervous that no one wears them anymore?

Get rid of that thinking. A pair of camo cargo shorts is still an incredibly versatile asset in your wardrobe, even though there are some people that will never appreciate the aesthetic.

Don’t try to please them anyway. Here’s how to wear those camo shorts and keep the style alive.

How to Style with Camo Cargo Shorts

There are many wrong ways to dress in camo, but there are some good pointers. Here are the top ones.

  • Don’t overdo the camo: Unless you’re hunting or engaged in paintball, airsoft, or MilSim, less is more. Wearing too much camo just kills it. Either you’re trying to remain concealed or just appreciate the look. If it’s the latter, camo pants are enough camo. Skip the camo hat, shirt, or jacket
  • Stick to neutrals: Don’t forget, even though camo is designed for concealment, it’s still a pattern, and that pattern doesn’t often vibe with others. More often than not it conflicts. Solid neutrals are a sure, safe bet. Whatever else you’re thinking of wearing, keep it black or gray.
  • A plain tee works best: Want to wear camo cargo shorts and have them look good? Save them for the hottest months of the year and pair with a white, black or gray undershirt. That’s all you need to complete the look.
  • Layer with a button down but keep it unbuttoned: For another layer of style, consider adding a button down over the undershirt, just leave it unbuttoned or it’ll look stuffy. And not a dress button down – a chambray, denim, chamois, or wool shirt will work. Patterned flannel can too but sometimes the patterns of flannel and camo look terrible together so be cautious.
  • Wear appropriate footwear: Nothing looks more off with a pair of cargo shorts than sneakers. Hikers, jungle boots, even logger boots look better with cargo shorts, not to mention, they’re more functional, anyway.

Why Cargo Shorts in the First Place?

This shouldn’t only serve as a defense of camo cargo shorts when cargo shorts are useful in their own right. They do get a lot of hate, from a fashion standpoint, but when you need to carry a lot of stuff, they just make sense. You can stash bags, tools, and other odds and ends in cargo shorts, keeping your two main side pockets free, and opening up your pack a little. Depending on the pants, you may be able to skip the pack entirely.
