Insights for Improving Your Golf Swing

Shot errors are frustrating. So is it when you can’t reach your target or when you struggle with shot dispersion.

There is a saying: it’s the Indian, not the arrow. This means in this area, as in all athletic pursuits, practice makes better.

So before you go and blame it on your gear – take these suggestions into account and practice them the next time you’re at the driving range.

Slow Down and Stop Trying to Drive So Much Power Into Your Swing
You’ve heard it said that swing speed is equivalent to power and that equates to golf ball speed, and therefore, distance. This is true.

But rushing and straining can cause minor inconsistencies in your approach, stance, and form, which can throw off your swing, causing errors with shot dispersion.

This brings up another problem, which is trying to swing harder. Trying to swing harder basically equates to straining, which also can ruin your form and make it difficult to establish a consistent form and a fluid swing.

Relax and Refine Your Grip
Let go of holding your club in a death grip. Holding your grip too tightly will cause your golf shaft to approach and contact the ball too rigidly. This can directly cause shot errors like slices.

(Conversely, if your grip is too loose, it can allow for aberrations in your swing that can also cause unpredictable shot errors.)

Also, become comfortable with allowing your left hand to guide the swing. This can be a minor hurdle to overcome for right-handed players, but your left hand is the one that controls the club face orientation, the trajectory of the swing, and shot direction.

Use the back of your left hand to guide the swing and keep it pointed toward the target at the point of (and through) impact. This helps some golfers with accuracy.

Develop a Consistent Stance
This sort of goes along with “slow down,” but it deserves its own recognition. Consistency in stance, grip, form, and swing all have a big impact on shot power, trajectory, and accuracy.

Starting with a proper stance sets the foundation for a proper swing. Think of a golf swing as sort of like a baseball swing; except your target is on a tee at the ground.

Start by standing square to the ball, with your feet shoulder-width or just slightly more, and knees ever so slightly bent. Your spine should tilt forward slightly at the base and towards your shoulders.

Before the swing, start with the ball in the middle of the club face. This will help minimize the number of corrections you need to make through the swing (ideally, you would need to make none).

Then, the rest is refinement.
