Scraping Together a Bare Bones SHTF Plan

In the event you’ve never heard of such before, an SHTF plan, or more properly, a “sh*t hits the fan” plan” is a plan you put in place for when disaster strikes.

Disasters can be either natural or manmade (or some combination of both) but to ensure you ride above the waves you need to be prepared in either scenario.

Here’s what you need to know about putting together a plan.

The Who

First, you need a party. Will it be just your immediate family that lives with you? Will you be involving close neighbors or friends? Will you need to gather family members that live nearby, but not in your immediate vicinity? All of these questions need to be answered before you can proceed.

Moreover, all of these considerations raise logistical challenges that you need to overcome. You need to determine who you will be with, and how you will get to them. Make sure you have contingencies in place for situations in which roads and other rights of way are impassable.

Also, you need emergency communication devices to ensure you can keep in touch with those people, if you are ever separated. It’s best to get and distribute them before a disaster.

The Where

The most important question here is will you be bugging out or bugging in. Bugging out implies you will not stay put and will move to find a better, safer location to weather the storm. Bugging in suggests you will be staying put, either where you live or somewhere close by.

In either scenario, you need to be prepared with disaster survival supplies that will vary slightly according to whether you will be staying put or you will be on the move.

The What

Once you know whom you’ll be with and whether you’ll be staying put or getting out of dodge, you need to come up with a list of disaster survival equipment to help make your SHTF plan successful.

In addition to emergency communication devices, you will also want a radio and small electronics like flashlights, along with chargers, batteries, and alternative power supplies, like portable solar chargers.

You will also need an emergency food supply, as well as a water supply, along with a water filtration system to ensure you don’t run out of clean potable water.

You’ll need first aid supplies, for anything you need to be able to treat at home, including but not limited to bandages, topical disinfectant, sting and burn relief, gauze, splints, sutures, medical tape, and other basic essentials, including OTC medications.

On top of that, you’ll need tools and weapons, not only to build shelter and make repairs, but also to defend yourself and your loved ones.
