One of the most common voltage ratings for general purpose building wire is 600 volts since most electrical service in this country is at or below 240 volts, with 120 volts probably being the most common.
This makes 600 volt wire popular because there is a comfortable buffer between the line service voltage and what the wire can handle.
But, with that being said, voltage rating (along with amperage rating) are only two facets of the fitness of an electrical wire to a given installation.
The insulation used is another key indicator of whether or not a 600 volt wire is suitable for installation in a given setting, whether or not the voltage alone should be accounted for.
So, let’s take a closer look at some of the more common types of insulation used with general purpose building wire.
Polyethylene (PE)
Polyethylene, also known as PE, is one of the most common materials used to make electrical insulation for building wire.
However, regular “PE” is commonly used for low voltage and low capacitance applications because it offers a low dielectric constant, is stable, and has high insulation resistance. In our capacity, the “type” of PE that will be encountered is known as cross-linked polyethylene, or XLPE.
XLPE is more durable and more stable than standard PE, yet it still represents good performance at a relatively low cost. It is also highly resistant to moisture as well as to a variety of chemicals, making it physically and chemically stable and durable, which only contribute to the reasons that it is so widely used as an electrical insulator.
Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)
When PVC is used to insulate general purpose 600 volt wire, it is sometimes blankly referred to as “thermoplastic,” even though it is a specific type of thermoplastic.
Nonetheless, there are many good reasons that it is commonly used; it has a wide operating temperature range (depending on the type of PVC used) and a wide range of dielectric constants, making it suitable for installation in a variety of settings.
It’s also one of the most economical options for electrical wire insulation, just like polyethylene, as a result of its low cost.

While PVC and PE are two of the most common materials used to create insulation for 600 volt electrical wire, there are many other common insulation materials used on other types of electrical wire and cable, including but not limited to:
- Nylon
- EPDM
- Silicone
- EPR
- SBR
- TPR
- Teflon
