3 Important Sources of Backup Power for Trail Life

For homes, there’s nothing like the peace of mind that solar panels, a gas generator, a small turbine, or even, in some cases, a wood gasifier offers.

These solutions to off-grid power backup can keep you independent of the crises that affect those who are entirely grid-dependent.

But what about when you’re not at home, either on the trail or in a bug out situation?

You’ll still need power, but what you can carry will be much more limited. Further, power banks and batteries are only so good for so long. Batteries die and power banks need access to another power source to take a charge – they don’t generate it.

Well, here are three practical solutions for moderate power generation for truly off-grid scenarios.

They won’t light up the whole house, but they can give your phone or laptop a charge, and offer you just a little peace of mind.

Hand-Crank Generators

We’ll start with hand-crank generators because these are probably the most accessible, yet least effective of the three that will be mentioned here.

If you’ve never handled one, usually they consist of a small pack with a hand crank. You turn the crank to generate power – it’s as simple as that.

Usually, these devices include a flashlight and are designed to power the light. However, some also come with integral power banks so that any surplus power generated can be used elsewhere.

They’re usually convenient, light, and easy to carry and use, but the tradeoff is that they are extremely inefficient and slow to generate power. You can crank one of these things pretty hard for 10 or 15 minutes and that still will only give you a minimal charge.

They’re better than nothing but there are better alternatives.

Portable Solar Panels

All else being equal, the best solution out there for off-grid, on-trail power generation is probably portable solar panels

Basically, these power banks have a solar panel or a series of panels integrated into them (and some of them fold up for convenience).

You place them out in the sun to charge, and when full, you can siphon off any power generated to your phone, laptop, light, or other small devices.

They are a lot more passive in their use, which is good, because if you have sun you can place one out all day and it will generate power.

This makes them easier and less strenuous to use than hand-crank models, but like hand-cranks, they are slow and inefficient. Still better than nothing, though, and probably the most practical option on this list.

Wood-Fired Generators

Lastly, we have wood-fired generators, which actually convert some of the heat from a (typically) small stove into electricity.

These are relatively efficient compared to the other models and if they have good integrated batteries can store a bit of electricity that you can then use to charge your other devices.

The thing is they tend to be more expensive than the other options mentioned here, they’re usually not nearly as packable, and moreover, you need fuel to be able to use them.

That said, they’re still practical for some campers.
