4 of the Best Driver Shafts in 2023 (and What Makes Them Great)

Spring really is just a few days away, and some of you reading this may be itching to get back out on the course or to the driving range so you can prepare for the upcoming season.

If you’ve still got some discretionary “golf budgeting” to burn and are looking for the best driver shafts for this year, we’ve got you covered.

These are among the best of them, along with what makes them great.

1. Fujikura Ventus Black
The Fujikura Ventus Black may not be new, but it still makes this list nonethtless. Available in stiffness ratings from stiff to tour spec extra-stiff, the Ventus Black is the stiffest shaft of the Ventus line, and perfect for players with high swing speeds.

It’s designed to deliver low launch, low spin shot profiles, and to tighten shot dispersion regardless of where the strike occurs – remaining fairly forgiving while offering the utmost in stability.

The ultra-stiff tip section is also very stable on impact, improving MOI and delivering higher speeds off the tee.

It’s a great shaft for players with higher swing speeds.

2. True Temper Project X HZRDUS Smoke Black
True Temper’s Project X HZRDUS Smoke line has been called the best of the best driver shafts in the game, and the HZRDUS Smoke Black makes a good showing.

The HZRDUS Smoke Black golf shafts are designed specifically for players with aggressive swing speeds (95-105 MPH) and tempos, and increases trajectory and range while tightening shot dispersion. It is also surprisingly stable and forgiving for such a stiff, low-launch shaft.

The only caveat we have to post here is this: while this is an excellent (truly) driver shaft for players with faster swing speeds, it’s not well suited for players with slower swing speeds.

3. Autoflex Golf Shafts
Autoflex golf shafts made near-immediate waves when they were first released a few years back. They are light, thin, surprisingly flexible, and imbued with what the company calls “KHT,” or “Korea Hidden Technology.” They’re also bright pink which probably contributed to the buzz.

Enough buzz talk, though. These shafts might feel light and whippy, and they are, but that doesn’t adversely impact performance. The clubhead still manages to keep pace with most players swings, and players of nearly all swing speeds have commented that they noticed improvements in range and accuracy when using them.

This makes these, unlike the Project X HZRDUS Smoke and the Fujikura Ventus Black mentioned above, some of the best driver shafts for players with slower swing speeds.

Don’t like pink? Autoflex golf shafts are now also available in rainbow colorway.

4. Grafalloy ProLaunch Blue
Last but not least, we have the Grafalloy ProLaunch Blue, which is one of the best golf driver shafts in terms of value. It’s more affordable than the others mentioned here but still delivers performance when it matters.

The Grafalloy ProLaunch Blue has a lot going for it. It’s made with “Speed Coat Technology” that encourages faster clubhead speeds, a “Micro-Mesh” tip that improves stability by reducing clubhead wobble, and an overall lightweight design.

This one is also more suitable for players with slightly slower swing speeds, as the lower kick point produces higher launch profiles that normally equate to extended shot ranges.

Where Can You Find the Best of the Best Driver Shafts?
These are some of the best driver shafts on the market in 2023, even though some of them are now a few years old. Their greatness has matured.

Either way, if you’re wondering if any of them is for you (and these options run the gamut of suitability for players with both fast and slow swing speeds) work with a golf club fitter.

A golf club fitter (like one of the professionals on the team at Dallas Golf Company) will help you determine which shaft is right for you – in terms of shaft length, weight, and stiffness – so you can get the most out of the game. Working with a professional for club fitting services is worth the investment several times over.

How the ESEE 4 in S35VN Is Different from the Original

Everyone knows that the standard, original ESEE 4 is made with a 1095 steel blade and treated with a powder coat, just like the overwhelming majority of ESEE Knives. It is a good steel, and a very tough steel. One that is unlikely to break, too, though that doesn’t matter too much because as a […]
