How to Survive with Only a Karesuando Knife
Split Woods
Knives are incredibly versatile tools. You can use a Karesuando Knife to cut and split wood for fire pits, a practice known as “batoning.”
Hold the blade against the wood and hit it with a stout stick to chop logs. To split logs, start the blade along the grain like an axe and smack it through the wood. It’s not nearly as effective as an axe, but does the job extremely well in a pinch.
Start a Fire
Use your fixed blade Karesuando as a fire starter. Prepare some tinder and sparks by striking the blade against a stone. The sparks will catch in the tinder, which will begin to smolder, and your fire will soon be lit. While not as simple as lighting a match, this approach is dependable if excellent tinder is available. Carry a pair of Vaseline-soaked cotton balls with you to catch your sparks and light up quickly in any condition.
Open Cans
Place the top of the blade on the can’s lid, and then lightly tap the other end of the knife with a stone. Continue cutting the rest of the lid until the hole becomes big enough to empty contents.
Build a Shelter
Because a Karesuando Knife can cut down branches, you can build your shelter using one. Start by chopping down some branches to use as padding on the bottom, then build a lean-to over them with a few robust branches and extra boughs or leafy branches.
