6 Reasons to Upgrade Your Golf Cart with a Lithium Ion Battery

Still running a lead acid battery in your golf cart? They are big, heavy, expensive, and inefficient, and that’s putting it lightly.

With no further ado or exposition, let’s take a closer look at some of the compelling reasons that lithium ion batteries are better – period.

1.  They’re lighter and more compact

Lead acid batteries are the epitome of inconvenience, and as a result of their lower energy density when compared to lithium ion batteries, they are much heavier and bulkier.

This makes them not only more difficult to move and install manually, it also costs your golf cart some efficiency. On golf carts, ounces matter, and a heavier battery is in no way beneficial.

Plus, space is generally limited in golf carts, too, so a more compact battery is pretty much always going to offer better value all things considered.

2.  They charge faster

A lead acid battery takes a long time to charge, invariably; even fast chargers typically take 4 hours or more, with 16 hours a more reasonable estimate.

Lithium ion batteries charge quickly. Obviously this depends on amperage but for some batteries, you can get a usable charge in as little as 2 to 4 hours, and in some cases less.

3.  They offer more consistent performance and have higher energy density

One of the obvious benefits of the high energy density associated with lithium ion batteries is the smaller, more compact size, as has been illustrated, but another big benefit is the raw power.

Lithium ion batteries offer better pickup for greater acceleration, especially when on a grade, than lead acid batteries offer. You’ll notice the difference if you make the switch, and in a vehicle with a motor that’s purely electric – like a golf cart – that battery makes a serious impact.

4.  They don’t taper off like lead-acid batteries do

One of the most inconvenient aspects of lead-acid batteries is that, as they discharge, they lose power, so once you get to, say, 50% of the charge, the battery won’t offer the same performance as it did.

Lithium ion batteries are not like this and generally offer the same power output until the battery’s charge gets very low. Therefore a nearly-discharged battery will offer almost the same power as one that’s fully charged.

5.  They last longer

You’re lucky if you get several hundred charge cycles from a lead acid battery, but a lithium ion battery should last for several thousand if you care for it properly. This makes them highly economical by comparison.

The long lifespan also helps to offset the high cost, which is one of the detractors commonly associated with lithium batteries.

6.  New lithium ion batteries are safer than ever

Some have raised concerns in the past that lithium ion batteries are not as safe as lead acid batteries, but given advances in battery management systems and technology, that is hardly the case, so long as you use an appropriate charger and observe reasonable safety protocols.

Namely, LiFePO4 batteries are particularly safe, and are not subject to the concerns of thermal runaway that cause safety issues with some lithium batteries.
