6 Things You Didn’t Know About Lithium Batteries (but Should’ve)

If you haven’t heard the buzz surrounding lithium batteries, and the numerous ways in which they outperform conventional batteries, you need to dig a little.

You won’t have to go too deep before you hear about their lighter weight, higher energy density, low maintenance, and long lifespans.

But did you know these facts about lithium batteries? Test yourself against them and see. They might even be better than you thought they were.

1.  Lithium is not just the lightest metal on earth, it’s the lightest metal in the universe

With an atomic number of just 3, lithium is not just the lightest metal on our planet, it is the lightest metal known. And, moreover, it is not just light as a metal, it is objectively light; only helium and hydrogen have lower atomic numbers.

This interesting fact is not just a useless bit of trivia; it gives rise to one of the most significant of all benefits of lithium batteries: high energy density. Because it is so lightweight and can carry so much energy relative to its weight,  lithium batteries are lighter and more compact than alternatives.

2.  Not all lithium batteries are the same

“Classic” lithium ion batteries used cobalt oxide or manganese oxide as a cathode material. There are also LiFePO4 batteries, also known as LFP batteries, which instead use lithium iron phosphate as the cathode material.

Like other lithium batteries, these are compact and have a high energy density. Unlike them, they are not prone to the issues of thermal runaway experienced under adverse charging conditions.

3.  Lithium batteries never need to be watered

You may be familiar with the fact that some types of conventional rechargeable batteries need to have their cells’ water level replenished periodically to protect the battery against damage.

Lithium batteries do not have a flooded cell in the same sense, and require much less (effectively no) maintenance by comparison, making them a much more convenient option, on top of their other relative advantages.

4.  Lithium batteries provide stable voltage as they discharge

Most other types of batteries deliver reduced power output as their voltage level drops when they discharge. This is not the case for lithium batteries, which generally deliver consistent power output until the battery is almost completely dead.

5.  Lithium batteries have a wide range of practical uses

Lithium batteries offer surprising versatility and there are batteries that can be used in RVs and campers, boats, golf carts and other small vehicles, and even for solar power storage. They replace many other applications of conventional lead-acid batteries as well.

6.  Battery management systems can significantly improve the safety of lithium batteries

There are some who would shy from lithium ion batteries because they are concerned about the fire risk, but more stable battery chemistry and battery management systems, which monitor the charge levels and temperatures of the cells as they charge, can significantly reduce, even effectively eliminate, the risk of thermal runaway which has led to fires with some types of lithium batteries in the past.

In other words, modern lithium ion batteries equipped with battery management systems are surprisingly safe.

How to Run a Construction Heater in a Half-Built Building Without Creating a Safety Nightmare

Cold weather doesn’t wait for a building to have walls. Crews working through winter routinely need to keep partially enclosed spaces warm enough for concrete to cure, drywall mud to set, or paint to bond properly. A construction heater makes all of that possible, but in open or partially sealed structures, how it’s set up […]
