Depending on the length, you can use an AR15 short barrel upper to build an SBR, or short barreled rifle, or an ARP, or AR pistol. If it’s really short you can even use one to build a micro ARP, or micro AR pistol.
Regardless, there are numerous relative advantages to a smaller, lighter build. Here are some of them.
- They’re lighter. Having a much shorter barrel, the upper will also have a shorter handguard as well, shaving no small amount of weight off of the overall build. This makes it much easier to handle and point a platform built with an AR short barrel upper.
- They’re easier to conceal. Also as a result of the shorter barrel, it is easier to conceal an SBR, or even moreso, an ARP. This makes them ideal as home defense guns, truck guns, and more.
- They’re easier to transport. Being more compact, it is also the case that these platforms are therefore more discreet, which in turn makes it easier to transport them as well.
- Being less barrel-heavy, they are faster. The shorter, lighter barrel of an SBR or ARP makes the whole gun more responsive in the hand. For point-and-shoot applications, a short barrel upper is a great option.
- They handle better in close quarters. Because they are so much lighter and more compact, SBRs and ARPs are some of the best options for defending close quarters. This makes them especially practical as home defense guns or PDWs.
- There’s little to no compromise on attachments. Even with a shorter handguard, there is still usually plenty of real estate for adding shooting attachments and accessories like lights and optics, even on the smallest of micro ARPs.
- There are options to build bufferless, which makes the build less complex. Some AR15 short barrel uppers use direct blowback action rather than direct gas impingement, making the whole gun more simplistic in operation, not to mention lighter and more compact, since they skip the whole buffer system.
- You can get rifle firepower in a smaller format. Lastly, building an SBR or ARP gives you the flexibility to keep rifle firepower even though the footprint of the gun may be more akin to a pistol than a rifle.
