8 Step Squarespace SEO

Squarespace is a relatively popular website platform with an intuitive drag-and-drop website builder that’s beginner friendly.

And it’s designed specifically for eCommerce, it’s easy to use features make it attractive to those that would launch an online store.

Because of its intuitive interface, it’s also relatively easy to optimize for Squarespace SEO. Here’s how to get that going in 8 relatively easy steps.

1.  Define your goals

First, and most importantly, make sure you’re on board with what SEO offers, but critically, that you’re in for the long haul. SEO usually takes 6 months to a year to really generate results, so don’t do all this work and then pull the plug on your efforts in 3 weeks.

2.  Look at your competitors

How large your competitors are, and how many there are, will determine which keywords you can realistically compete for. If you don’t have a lot, you can go for basically any keywords, if there are a bunch, you’ll want to stick with keywords that have difficulty scores of less than 20.

3.  Do some keyword research

Next, get familiar with a keyword research tool like SEMRush or Ahrefs. What you need to find are some keywords that have substantial volume and low difficulty scores. Ideally the difficulty scores should be below 30. The other thing you should look for are keywords that have commercial and transactional search intent.

4.  Optimize basic on-page ranking factors

Once you have a list of keywords you want to go after, the next step is to make some basic changes to your important category pages (and to a lesser extent, to product pages). Where relevant, add some of your target keywords into page titles and headers, then add some internal links between products and categories that represent cross-selling opportunities. Now is also a good time to scrub your pages for duplicate copy and rewrite it as necessary.

5.  Optimize for speed and security

Get and configure an SSL certificate if your website doesn’t have one; you also need to optimize for speed. Check to see how your pages perform through Google’s PageSpeed Insights. One easy area to improve page load speeds is to compress all the images on your website; there are free tools and plugins you can use for this.

6.  Scrub GSC for broken links

Once you’ve made these basic optimizations, check GSC (Google Search Console) for broken links, and disavow them wherever you find them. This is because broken links, even if users never land on them, are a technical error that Google doesn’t like to see.

7.  Start a content publication schedule

Once you have your target keywords, have made basic on-page optimizations and technical optimizations, you need to start content marketing. The bulk of a website’s organic visibility comes from effective content marketing, and the easy way to do this is through CMS pages that you add to your website, or through a blog schedule.

8.  Monitor GSC and GA4 for results

The process described in here constitutes the bulk of Squarespace SEO work. It’s all fairly simple and straightforward, the challenge is that it’s a lot of work and a big commitment with respect to resources and time. After you get the ball rolling, make sure you keep an eye on both GSC and GA4 so you can keep track of growth.

Working with a Squarespace SEO Specialist

If all of this sounds like a lot of work, that’s because it is. It’s also the reason that so many eCommerce entrepreneurs ultimately choose to work with SEO specialists to bring them more organic visibility, traffic and leads. If you’re considering working with a Squarespace SEO specialist, the best advice we can offer is this: make sure you find your partner through the organic search results, not through an ad. Anyone can pay for an ad, but search results must be earned.
