High-Level Lock Maintenance (and What to Do If You Can’t Get in)

We rely on locks for access to secured locations, whether that be the inside of a chest stored in the basement, a gate to the yard, or just the entryway to your home.

In all cases, access is essential, and the lock is the critical point that enables it. Poor lock maintenance will result in lock seizure or failure, preventing access. Fortunately, there are a few basic things you can do to help prevent this from happening.

  • Keep the lock clean in the first place. This is the single most important aspect of lock maintenance, and the one that is the easiest to keep to, even passively. In some cases, it will however be easier than others. If the lock is stored inside you can use compressed air to dust it off periodically; you may also have the option to keep the lock covered. This is the best solution if it is at all possible with a lock that is stored outside. Dust, pollen, and other debris can get on or in locks that are exposed to the elements which can make them gritty and difficult to operate. Keeping them loosely covered can help prevent these from becoming bigger problems than they are.
  • Never spray with oil or grease. If you have a lock that is gritty, corroded, tough to turn, or completely seized, it may seem like a good idea to spray the lock with a standard lubricant like an oil or grease. This is however a terrible idea as these lubricants, once they enter the lock, will never leave. Worse, they will attract grime, dirt and sludge that will accumulate, which over time will make the lock even harder to work. Instead, use a lock-based lubricant, as indicated in the next section.
  • Use a lock-based lubricant. There are liquid lock lubricants that you can use to make a lock turn more freely, and which are designed to leave no residue once they are applied. Another alternative is a dry lubricant, like graphite, which will lubricate the lock without leaving a wet or sticky residue. Either way, if you have a lock that is not turning smoothly, consider a lock-based lubricant before you take more drastic measures.

If You Can’t Get in…

Suppose you have a lock that you can’t get into but you need access, and lubrication isn’t cutting it. Here are two avenues for you to pursue based on the severity of the lockout.

Buy a Lock Pick Set

If you have a stubborn lock that just won’t let you in, you might be able to get through with a basic lock pick set. There are lock pick sets you can get for a real bargain online; some of the most budget-friendly and effective sets can be found online at BUDK.

These are easy to use, but they are most effective on basic locks, such as those found on lock cases. This is one alternative for you to attempt before you call a locksmith to the scene for a further evaluation.

Call a Locksmith

If you can’t get into the lock in question with a lock pick set, it’s a good idea to call a locksmith in your area so that you don’t do any damage to the lock that won’t budge.

Locksmiths can help address the issue, may be able to get you into the lock, and should be able to do so without damage.

That said, once you do get into the lock, make sure you properly maintain the lock as indicated in this article (or follow any other special instructions from the locksmith) to ensure you don’t repeat the experience of getting locked out.
