What Makes .408 and .375 CheyTac Two of the Best ELR Cartridges Out There?

You can shoot a rifle chambered in .50 BMG, .338 Lapua, or .300 Norma Magnum at extreme ranges, and it will perform well as long as your rifle is sighted-in properly and you train with it. Both of these cartridges have a vetted history of performance as extreme long-range rifle cartridges, with the former two even having considerable use in military applications.

But there are other cartridges, namely .408 and .375 CheyTac, which are literally designed to perform at extreme ranges. Here are three reasons these cartridges are among the best in the industry for ELR shooting.

CNC-Machined Solid Copper Bullets

Both .408 and .375 CheyTac ammo are loaded with CNC-machined, solid copper bullets. This improves stability and accuracy, and at any range, not just at extreme ranges.

Most bullets, even OTM and other cartridges intended for extreme long-range rifle shooting, are made with a lead bullet core that is swaged, and around which a copper jacket is drawn, either down from the nose or up from the base.

Either way, this process can result in irregularities, specifically radial irregularities that can cause the bullet to wobble slightly in flight. This can result in slight aberrations in accuracy, as well as in fliers.

Both .408 and .375 CheyTac are CNC-machined from solid copper bullets. This primarily accomplishes two objectives; for one thing, it improves the consistency of cross-sectional density, and for another, it improves radial symmetry, which reduces wobble in flight, resulting in exceptionally stable, and thereby accurate, bullets.

Balanced Flight Projectiles

The CNC-machined, solid-copper bullets that are loaded into .408 and .375 CheyTac cartridges are also called “Balanced Flight Projectiles.”

Without getting lost in the details, these “Balanced Flight Projectiles” are designed with a high ballistic coefficient (more on that in a second) that keeps the bullets supersonic for longer, with the intention of keeping them supersonic all the way to the target.

The reason this is important is that the longer a bullet is supersonic, the better. Entering the transonic zone will introduce the bullet to shock forces that will destabilize it in its flight.

Keeping the bullet out of the transonic zone for as long as possible will shield it from these shock forces, upholding a higher degree of stability in bullet flight.

High Ballistic Coefficients

Lastly, both the .408 and .375 CheyTac boast very high ballistic coefficients; .949 for the former and .988 for the latter (although this can vary according to the bullet used in the load).

These exceptionally high ballistic coefficient scores give both cartridges very low bullet drop and a very high resistance to wind drift.

This, paired with the fact that these cartridges are loaded with CNC-machined, solid-copper, “Balanced Flight Projectiles” makes them among the best cartridges ever developed for extreme long-range rifle shooting.

Conduit vs. Tray Cable: What to Know

When cables are installed in complex electrical circuits, there are two main ways that this is executed: either the cable is drawn through a pipe-like structure called conduit, or else a special grade of cable called tray cable is laid in raceways called cable tray.  Though cable trays are becoming increasingly popular for the relative […]

Why a Regenerative Desiccant Air Dryer Keeps Outdoor Air Lines From Freezing

Outdoor compressed air lines freeze for one reason: the air inside them carries more water vapor than the pipe temperature allows. A regenerative desiccant air dryer removes that vapor before it reaches exposed piping, loading docks, and unheated buildings. Plant managers who wait for the first frozen drip leg end up with stalled actuators, burst […]
