About the Different Types of Skid Steer Trencher Chains and Teeth

Skid steer trenchers are surprisingly versatile attachments that can be used to cut trenches for utilities and conduits, for draining and irrigation, and much more.

Spartan Equipment’s skid steer trenchers are made from American steel and feature high-torque hydraulic motors for maximum digging power, along with extremely durable anti-back-flex chains.

They come with two-position manual side-shift mounting with optional infinite position using the hydraulic side-shift cylinder assembly. Their trencher attachments also feature heavy-duty booms and crumbers (with multiple different boom lengths available, up to 48”) and can replace dedicated machines at a fraction of the cost.

But no two skid steer trencher attachments are the same; in fact, they specifically vary in terms of chain and tooth-style configuration, making them uniquely suitable for different soil types and digging conditions. Here is what they offer.

Cup Tooth Chains
Cup tooth chains have special “cupped” teeth that excel at removing soil and sand from trenches, especially in areas with wet or loose soil. These are best in conditions where the soil is not too heavily compacted.

These types of chains are not particularly suitable in conditions in which the soil is heavily compacted, frozen, or where there is a lot of rock, but they are best in loose soil. In these conditions, more aggressive tooth patterns would allow the trench to backfill; cup teeth carry the loose spoil up and away from the trench.

Rock and Frost Chains
Rock and frost chains are sometimes referred to as “bullet” chains. These are among the most aggressive skid steer trencher chains and should be used in the most unforgiving conditions.

Rock and frost chains are best suited for cutting through extremely compacted earth, frozen ground, and soil containing large, impenetrable rocks.

That being said, they are not particularly effective in conditions with light, loose, or wet soil. They will cut into it, but they will not evacuate the spoil efficiently.

Shark Style Chains
Shark-style teeth are more aggressive than cup-style teeth but not as effective at cutting through extremely tough earth as rock and frost chains.

These chains have very aggressive, sharp teeth that can be used to loosen dense, compacted, moderately rocky soil where there is less of a chance that the soil will backfill into the trench during excavation. Consequently, like rock and frost chains, shark-style chains are not particularly effective in light, loose soil conditions.

Skid Steer Trencher Uses
Regardless of the skid steer trencher chain configuration that is most suitable for your given applications, trenchers can be highly useful for tackling a wide range of commercial, agricultural, and industrial applications.

Trenchers can be used to cut up and remove pavement, cut trenches for laying electrical conduits and other pipes, and for digging irrigation ditches and french drains.

Trenchers can also be used to reclaim and loosen soil in areas where there are thick mats of roots. They can easily cut through the toughest, thickest roots and break up the soil. Trenchers can also be used to clear the way to lay sprinkler pipes or sewage lines.
