Are All AR-15 Bullet Shell Catchers Only Compatible with .223/5.56?

To be honest, it’s not like it’s classified information that the vast majority of AR-15 rifles are chambered in either 5.56 NATO or .223 Remington. That’s like a standard for this platform, and the light cartridge is so popular that many other sporting rifles that aren’t even Armalites are also chambered in the same.

The cartridge is short, light-shooting, flat-shooting, affordable, and, before the current Ammo Crisis, pretty ubiquitous. The NATO cartridge was available in nearly any gun shop you could find, and .223 was right on its heels.

It has plenty of serviceable applications, from varmint control to competition shooting and even hunting small and medium game, and its affordability and ubiquity firmly entrenched it in the slot of “sporting rifle chambering of choice.”

But not all AR-15s are chambered in .223 or 5.56, and furthermore, as a result, not all bullet shell catchers are compatible only with those spent casings.

If you’re looking for a brass trap that can do it all, handle more, and is compatible with a wider range of different brass, then the Brass Goat by Magwell Mounts is for you.

What’s with All the Other Chamberings?
It’s clear enough that the .223 and 5.56 have plenty of virtues that don’t need to be covered here – but that doesn’t make them the “ultimate” cartridge if ever such a thing could even be claimed to exist.

There are plenty of other serviceable pairings with sporting rifles like the AR-15 that are very popular.

Take the .300 Blackout, for instance, which is loaded with projectiles of substantially higher mass than the 5.56 or .223, and which consequently maintains superior ballistic performance at greater ranges.

Or, for instance, consider the .224 Valkyrie, which, like the .300 Blackout, is superficially similar to the .223 – but which is faster and much flatter shooting.

Or, perhaps, consider the .50 Beowulf, which is a much larger, heavier cartridge overall, and which does not shoot as flat or reach the same effective ranges, but carries substantially more energy up close and which solves some overpenetration problems associated with some .223 or 5.56 rounds.

On that note, there are AR-15 bullet shell catchers that are compatible with the AR-15 as well as with a number of popular cartridges. For instance, the Brass Goat is compatible with the following spent brass rounds:

● .223/5.56

● .17 Rem

● .204 Ruger

● .22 Nosler

● .224 Valkyrie

● .300 Blackout

● .35 Viper

● .458 SOCOM

● .450 Bushmaster

● .50 Beowulf

And a wide range of other cartridges – see their Brass Goat Compatibility page for additional details.

Where Can I Get the Best Bullet Shell Catcher?
The Brass Goat by Magwell Mounts is an AR-15 brass catcher that quickly attaches to mil-spec AR-15 lower receiver magwells, keeping your Picatinny rail clear for mounting other accessories.

It also solves many of the problems associated with mesh bag bullet shell catchers with wire frames – in addition to the fact that it is compatible with so many other cartridges.

For instance, it will never melt, catch fire, jam, or hang up on brush, and it’s also impervious to the elements since it’s made from molded ABS resin.
