Are MOLLE Packs Better Than ALICE Packs?

MOLLE packs are a modern alternative to the ALICE packs that have remained popular for years in this country, even though they aren’t in official military use anymore.

Still, there are virtues to each. This short post will take a closer look at some of the considerations.

MOLLE Packs

Short for Modular Lightweight Load-Carrying Equipment, MOLLE systems (including packs) use a series of webbing and slots that enable additional equipment to be clipped or lashed onto them, making them extremely modular (hence the name).

Some of the advantages they have over ALICE packs include:

  • MOLLE packs offer the utmost in versatility and expandability, as anything that’s MOLLE compatible can be attached to a MOLLE pack and used to expand it.
  • Even items that are not expressly MOLLE compatible can be clipped to the external slots of a MOLLE system. Anything with a carabiner or a pocket clip can be attached in this fashion.
  • The same ability that enables you to expand MOLLE systems enables you to effortlessly pare them down.
  • Items can be organized on both the inside and outside of MOLLE systems as a result of the slots that are present on the exterior.
  • The ability to expand on the outside of the system can keep vital gear closer and more readily accessible.
  • MOLLE packs tend to be better padded and more comfortable than ALICE packs.

However:

  • Some MOLLE packs are made with internal polymer frames that are considered a weak point as they can break or deform under stress.

ALICE Packs

ALICE, for All-purpose Lightweight Individual Carrying Equipment, consists of a frame that supports a large pack with a central compartment, typically along with two other external pouches. Though they are not quite as modular as MOLLE systems, they offer their own advantages:

  • Because they are older, ALICE packs are often sold as military surplus, keeping them more accessible and more affordable.
  • Gear must be stored inside of ALICE packs for the most part, which offers better protection as opposed to having it clipped to the exterior.
  • The frame that supports ALICE packs can provide better support to the carrier than most MOLLE packs would offer.

At the same time:

  • ALICE packs lack the modularity of MOLLE systems.
  • The rivets and frame of the ALICE pack can create a lot of noise and creaking unless the user actively takes steps to silence them.

Where to Get Either?

With all of this being said, it should be clear that there is not one pack that is objectively better than the other, and that both have their places.
