Caring for Laminate Desks

Laminate desks (and other laminate furniture) can be a great investment for your office space. Laminate desks are extremely durable, relatively inexpensive when compared to solid wood furniture, and unlike both veneer and solid wood, laminate is resistant to scratching, gouges, and stains.

With that said, it’s still important to care for your laminate desks and other office furniture if you want them to last.

Here are some general pointers for care and cleaning.

For Spills and Mild Stains
The best way to prevent stains and liquid damage to laminate desks it to clean up spills as soon as they occur.

For fresh spills and mild stains, first try removing them with some warm water and a sponge or a clean rag.

If that doesn’t work, use some mild soap or detergent. Lightly scrub the surface and be sure to dry it thoroughly when finished.

For More Aggressive Stains
More difficult stains like coffee and grease stains may require a little more elbow grease and a more powerful detergent.

Try a paste of baking soda and water, scrubbing with a sponge or a microfiber towel; but do not scrub too aggressively as this can damage the surface of the laminate.

Other mild cleaners include Windex, isopropyl alcohol, and a mixture of water and bleach, 10:1 or milder. Do not use stronger concentrations of bleach as they will damage laminate furniture.

Rinse and dry thoroughly after using any of these cleaners are prolonged exposure will damage the surface of the laminate or cause discoloration.

What Not to Use on Laminate Desks
While the previously-listed cleaners can be safely applied to laminate desks in the manner as prescribed, there are some you should never use on laminate. These include but are not limited to the following:

● Any abrasive cleaners, such as Ajax or pumice (these will scratch laminate)
● Acids, such as hydrochloric acid, muriatic acid, sulfuric or oleic acid
● Sodium hydroxide
● Caustic soda or lye
● Rust remover

When in doubt, do not use a cleaner on a laminate surface.

Protecting Against Burns and Scratching
Laminate desks can also be damaged by excessive heat or hard objects, which can scratch them.

Hot pots, pans, dishes, mugs and other such containers can damage laminate furniture. Always place down a hot pad, trivet, or just some other textile when placing anything hot down on the surface.

Also, hard objects such as pens, spiral notepads, and other similar items can damage the finish of a laminate desk’s surface. If you or your employees have these on their desks, never drag them across the surface. Always lift to remove and place them down where you want them. Sliding, slipping, and dragging can cause scratches and gouges.
