Choosing the Perfect Crib For Your Newborn – And Why The Best Are Convertible Cribs

Every parent wants the safest, most affordable, and most worthwhile options for their children. This is especially true where newborn babies are involved. Every expecting mother wants to be able to provide for their new baby a special space where they can settle down, relax, and be as comfortable as possible.

The crib is often considered the focal point of a nursery. It’s a place where the baby will be spending much of their infant years. This is why it’s important to carefully consider which crib is best suited for yourself and your baby.

Personally, we recommend choosing the best convertible crib that fits your budget, as convertible cribs can stay with you much longer than other types of cribs. But before that, why don’t we look at some other crib options.

Types of Cribs

1. Bassinets & Bedside Sleepers
Perfect for the first four to five months after birth, these cribs are portable, lightweight, and often allow for gentle rocking motions. They are usually situated right next to a bed, making it easy for moms to nurse without having to fully get out of bed.

2. Standard Size Crib
These are your standard full-sized cribs that take up more space than a bassinet. They’re perfect for families with more space in their home, as these cribs can last until your baby is about 1.5 to 2 years old.

3. Convertible Cribs
Finally, convertible cribs are very similar to standard-sized cribs in terms of their dimensions. However, what sets convertible cribs apart is their ability to transform into toddler beds, day beds, and even full-sized beds, making them a long-term investment that can serve you until 3 years and beyond.

What Makes The Best Convertible Cribs
In general, toddlers will transition to a bed between 18 months and 3 years. Given that these are years apart, it’s important to consider just what the best convertible crib needs in order to serve you for years to come.

A. Flexibility In Options
Most convertible cribs have at least 2 modes, a crib and a toddler bed. Most 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 cribs, however, have the option to keep or take away some of the toddler rails, headboards, and footboards. This way your child won’t have to fear falling out of bed while they’re transitioning to a toddler bed. Some cribs also have daybed options, as well as full-sized bed options for when your baby grows into that charming big-kid.

B. Adherence to Recommended Safety Standards
About a decade ago, crib safety standards were updated to require the removal of drop-side rails. That’s why you’ll notice that any cribs made after 2011 no longer have that feature. Consider, as well, the distance between crib slats. The recommended safe distance is no more than 2 3/8 inches.

C. Mattress’ Comfort
A good mattress should fit your crib like a glove, as well as be firm, breathable, and comfortable. A good crib mattress is usually no more than 6 inches thick.

Ready To Buy Your Best Convertible Crib?
While canvassing through the best convertible cribs, you want to be able to look through a dozen different variations. After all, besides the differences in style, you also want to consider whether you’re going for a 3-in-1, a 4-in-1, or a 5-in-1.

For that reason, we recommend checking out Kids N Cribs’ amazing selection. As a family owned business that’s been in operation for over 36 years, you can be sure that they’re the right partners in choosing what’s best for your growing family.
