Compressed Air Dryer System: Which One Do You Need?

Regardless of the industrial setting, clean air is key for numerous reasons: health of the staff members, conditions for machinery, ideal conditions for manufacturing and storage of products, and much more.

In order to achieve sublime air in an industrial environment, like in oil and gas, pipeline, and petrochemical, the utilization of particular machine systems is pertinent and even mandatory. One prime example of such a system is a compressed air dryer system. What exactly is this system, what industries should use them, and what types are there available?

What Is a Compressed Air Dryer System?
A compressed air dryer takes compressed air within a particular location, removes the water vapor or moisture from it in order to lessen the dew point, then releases newly cooled and dried air to adhere to ideal conditions.

This system is so important to various industries because if a dew point is too high in certain locations, machinery can greatly diminish in quality and even corrode. Other negative effects can arise as well, such as frozen pipes and product or equipment contamination.

What Industries Use Them?
There is a wide range of applications for compressed air dryers across numerous industries. Some key industries that utilize compressed air dryers, however, are nuclear power, pharmaceutical, manufacturing, naval, food/beverage, and chemical/petrochemical.

What Types of Compressed Air Dryers Are There?
Just as there are several industries that these systems can be used in, there are several types of these systems as well.

First, compressed air dryers are divided into two categories: primary and secondary. In the primary category, there are three types: deliquescent, coalescing, and refrigerated. As for the secondary category, membrane and desiccant dryers fall under it.

There are, as you might have already guessed, key differences between all five of these types of compressed air dryers.

Deliquescent: an electricity-free and low-maintenance dryer that uses a special tablet that, while dissolving, absorbs water vapor. These are typically used as landfill gas or natural gas dryers.

Coalescing: these dryers use coalescing filters to remove the water aerosols and other moisture from compressed air but also oil aerosols and other smaller contaminants. These are often referred to as “filters” along with “dryers.”

Refrigerated: these work to cool the air to a temperature at which condensation of the water vapor is possible. There are two separate systems of this type of dryer: air circuit and refrigeration circuit.

Membrane: these dryers take the moist air and pass it through tiny tubes which are made of semi-permeable material, then discharged as dry compressed air.

Desiccant: using the principle of adsorption, desiccants (like activated alumina, silica gel and molecular sieves) play a primary role in these dryers to capture moisture from the air.
