Corn Cob LED Lights: Major Questions, Answered

Looking for ways to update your facility with more energy-efficient lighting, but you’re not sure what options are available?

If you’re currently utilizing HID, or high-intensity discharge bulbs, one potential solution may come in the form of corn cob LED lights.

Here are some of the major questions about LED corn lights, answered.

What Are Corn Cob LEDs?
Corn cob LED lights are special LED lights that are intended to offer similar luminous intensity and overall performance to traditional HID lamps, like high-pressure sodium bulbs and metal halide lamps.

They are designed to be energy-efficient replacements for these types of light bulbs and consist of strips of individual LED lights on a metal housing which is somewhat reminiscent of corn kernels on a cob; hence their name.

Why Do People Use Corn Cob LEDs in Place of HID Bulbs?
While most HID lights offer excellent brightness and CRI once they are warmed up (as well as relatively long lifespans and energy efficiency), corn cob LEDs are engineered to outperform them.

Corn cob LED lights are far more energy efficient, require no warm-up time (they reach their peak brightness almost immediately), and produce far less heat than HID lights.

LED lights are also available in a wide range of color temperatures, and, unlike HID lights, do not require a ballast (ballast bypass is often required during installation).

In addition, many corn cob LEDs are physically much more durable than glass HID bulbs and are usually sealed to protect them against dust and insects. Moreover, many corn cob LEDs can be burned base up, down, or even horizontally. This makes LED corn bulbs a great replacement for many HID bulbs.

Are LED Corn Cob Lamps Better?
That depends on what your qualifications are, but corn cob LED lights deliver excellent energy efficiency, long lifespans, and produce little heat. Also, LEDs are made without toxic components and are quite durable.

Many corn cob lights are also rated for installation in enclosed light fixtures and damp locations, and some even have color temperatures that can be adjusted.

How Long Do LED Corn Bulbs Last?
Most LED corn cob lights will last many thousands of hours and some are rated to nearly 50,000 hours. By contrast, most HID lights will last somewhere between 2,000 and 8,000 hours, although some may last longer.

Do LED Corn Bulbs Get Hot?
LED corn cob lights produce heat as they burn, like all lighting, but many of them are self-cooling and they do not get nearly as hot as HID bulbs.

Are There Any Disadvantages of Corn Cob Lights?
Not really, although some users remark that sometimes LED light bulbs do not produce desirable directional lighting when retrofitted into fixtures designed for HID lamps. This makes it important to choose corn cob LED lights with a beam angle that is suitable for both the fixture and the application.
