Help Me Understand the Basic, High-Level Differences Between Airsoft and MilSim

To those that have never played in an airsoft competition, let alone never shot an airsoft gun, it might seem confusing what the difference is between regular airsoft events and MilSim competitions.

There might be some lingering confusion, even in the minds of airsoft players that have been at this for a while.

So let’s take a few minutes to throw some words together to parse these minor differences and eliminate any confusion.

What Is Airsoft?
Airsoft is a type of competitive engagement in which users simulate some sort of combat environment with artificial, replica weapons styled after rifles, shotguns, pistols, and other platforms.

The objectives of each airsoft event or competition vary based on the organizer of the event. For instance, the objective of a specific event might be to capture a flag, capture a base, or disable some sort of infrastructure.

The officials organizing the event set the rules and objectives, and players attempt to delay the progress of the opposing team by “tagging” them out by striking them with round plastic projectiles fired from their airsoft guns.

Depending on the organizer of the event, “tagged” players may not necessarily need to be removed permanently from play.

Airsoft events sometimes take place over several days and airsoft players also sometimes carry extensive field gear enabling them to set up camp or establish fortifications in the field.

What Is MilSim?
MilSim, which stands for military simulation, is like airsoft and oftentimes Milsim events are also airsoft events, but MilSim constitutes a specific discipline.

Military simulation is intended to closely replicate the conditions of the battlefield, and the weapons carried by soldiers, to replicate military training, and capture the overall atmosphere of combat.

Although MilSim is largely intended for a civilian audience, military and law enforcement agencies can organize military simulation events for the purposes of training or preparation.

Some military simulation matches closely restrict what players can use, carry and wear. Some matches are also reproduction matches in which simulated weapons and gear must be compatible with the time period and country affected; in some instances, MilSim matches might even take place on a course that has been purposely altered to simulate the conditions associated with a historical military engagement.

Think of it this way. Some airsoft events are MilSim events, but not all MilSim events are necessarily airsoft events. Also, the conditions associated with MilSim are typically more closely defined than those associated with most other airsoft events.

MilSim engagements also typically revolve around more realistic objectives, such as the recovery of “hostages” or “ordnance defusing, capture or deactivation.” In some cases, historians are consulted to help ensure the most realistic, accurate portrayal of events possible.

Why Gantry Crane Rentals Keeps Heavy Projects Moving

Some projects push past what forklifts can realistically handle.
