Highlighting the Virtues of the ZF9’s Roller Delayed Blowback

A recoil-operated or direct blowback handgun is not your only option for a PDW for home defense.

You also don’t need to settle for the direct gas-impingement of an ARP. There are other options that offer significant advantages over all these action types.

One of those is the ZF9 PDW from Zenith Firearms, which sports a roller-delayed blowback action. Here are some of the best reasons for that.

Long-Lasting, Smooth-Shooting

Unlike direct blowback operation, it’s not just bolt mass and cartridge pressure that drive the action. With a roller-delayed blowback operation, there are rollers that fit into barrel trunnions, delaying the opening of the action until bore pressure drops to safer levels.

This action is more durable and has longer-lasting components than direct blowback and gas impingement systems, and is inherently smoother shooting than the former.

It is true that gas systems can be tuned to make them very smooth shooting, but that’s not easy to do and it’s far too easy to over or undergas a rifle. That’s not to mention that the gas block isn’t the only thing that needs adjustment with a gas system. You also need to know how to tune the buffer weights. There are (conceptually and literally speaking) a lot of moving pieces.

This is not the case with a roller-delayed blowback action. These are smooth-shooting out of the gate and have longer-lasting components.

Simpler Operation

Roller-delayed blowback operation is more simplistic than gas impingement as well as other similar action types.

As a result, the reduced complexity of design incurs a lower incidence of parts malfunction, making roller-delayed blowback operation among the most reliable firearm action types available.

While there are, for instance, several different working parts of a gas impingement system, by replacing the recoil spring or bolt assembly of a roller-delayed blowback operation, you can likely address any issues experienced.

Suppressor-Ready

Another of the greatest advantages of the ZF9’s roller-delayed blowback system is that it will perform well with a suppressor.

Both recoil-operated and direct blowback operations are not as reliable with suppressors and create a lot of port pop as the pressurized gas escapes back through the port, as it has nowhere else to go.

The same conditions affect the gas impingement systems of ARPs, and on top of that, the extra pressure created by suppressors is a lot harder on the gas system components, which will wear out much more quickly.

However, the more robust internal design of a roller-delayed blowback’s locking system will experience less wear as a result of running in conjunction with a suppressor. On top of that, roller-delayed blowback actions are already smooth-shooting and will produce less port pop as the system innately forces pressure to drop before the action opens anyway.

Where to Learn More About the ZF9

These are only a few of the high-level virtues of the ZF9 PDW’s roller-delayed blowback operation. There’s much more to love about this platform as well.

For instance, the lack of a gas system means there is no buffer tube, so there’s nothing sticking off the back of the receiver; these platforms are incredibly compact.

Another is that the ZF9 is equipped with generous rail space over the receiver and around the handguard, offering plenty of room for expansion through shooting attachments and accessories.

The ZF9 is also compatible with Glock and Scorpion mags, adding convenience to reliable operation.
