How To Store Your Mink Coats in the Summer

The beginning of summer may signify taking your first bite of a delicious banana split. Others view it as a cue to start cleaning up the vacation home. However, the first glimpse of summer sends thousands of women and an increasing number of men scrambling to store fur coats.

If you’re the proud owner of a mink coat, you’re probably wondering how to keep it safe and sound while you wait for the warm season to end. As a result, many mink coat owners keep them in specialized fur storage facilities.

But if you’re more of a do-it-your-own kind of fella, here are some methods for storing a fur coat over the summer!

Find a dark and cool place to store your precious mink fur.
If you’re going to keep your fur coat somewhere, make sure it’s dark and cool. Because heat has a propensity to dry both leather and fur, furs do not withstand heated temperatures well.

In addition, prolonged exposure to the sun’s rays can age the fur and ultimately destroy it.

You may be thinking, “Hey, I can just store them in the basement, it’s cool and dark there too!” Avoid putting a fur coat in the basement or any other moist area at all when keeping one.

Fur coat linings cannot withstand the high levels of humidity found in most basements. It can lead to the growth of mold, which can eventually ruin the material. It is also advised against keeping things in hot, stuffy places like the attic or the garage.

Make room for them to take a breath.
In ideal circumstances, fur coats are maintained far enough apart to allow for adequate circulation of the icy, dry air surrounding each coat.

If you decide to store your coat on hangers, pick a breathable garment bag. Avoid using plastic bags, and always check the bag to see if it is acceptable for furs.

Avoid rubbing your fur coat against any other fabrics to prevent wear and tear. As a general rule, you should hang your fur coat in a room that is large enough for it to stand on its own.

What exactly is a fur storage vault?
For optimum results, use a climate-controlled environment with dry air circulation and lights no brighter than 60 watts. Most furriers and storage managers agree that the ideal temperature and humidity for a storage vault are 38 to 45 degrees Fahrenheit and 50 percent, respectively.

Fur and fur-trimmed coats aren’t the only goods that end up in storage throughout the summer. Hats, muffs, and scarves made of fur are frequently sent off. These are normally stored in cardboard boxes in the vault.

However, even if you follow one of the two methods we’ve provided for storing mink coats properly, it will still be difficult to find a location and temperature that are ideal for your furs. It’s best to leave your mink coats in the care of a professional storage facility until you’re ready to use them.
