Making a Christmas Tree Topper from Picks and Sprays

A lot of decorators finish the tree with a Christmas tree topper, but beginning with it is actually a good idea, too.

The reason for this is that the topper serves as a capstone accent for your entire tree, so starting with the topper will give you a decorative foundation on which you can build.

With that being said, while there are a lot of pre-made Christmas tree toppers out there, like angels, Santas, and classic stars, you can also make your own custom tree topper with some picks and sprays that you choose to customize the project.

This short post will break down the details.

Step One: Choose Your Picks and Sprays

The first step in creating a personalized Christmas tree topper for your tree is to choose the picks and sprays you will use for the project.

The secret to a full, designer-quality tree topper is layering a variety of picks and sprays. We recommend selecting 4–5 different styles and using approximately 3–7 pieces of each style, depending on the size of your tree and how full you want the topper to look.

For a tree topper, we typically look for tall picks and sprays that create height, drama, and movement at the top of the tree. Rather than varying the height of the stems, focus on choosing pieces that extend well above the tree and help create a strong, eye-catching silhouette.

To add dimension, choose a variety of textures within the same color palette or theme. For example, you might combine berry stems, leafy sprays, wispy picks, florals, and more unique statement pieces. Mixing textures keeps the topper visually interesting while still creating a cohesive, professionally designed look.

Step Two: Arrange, Starting with Larger Picks

Start with the largest or bulkiest picks and sprays you’ve chosen, and lay the stem alongside the pole that supports the tree. When you’re placing the first few, you can use some of the tree’s greenery to wrap around the stem of the pick or spray so that it doesn’t move.

Step Three: Adding in Accent Picks and Sprays

Once you’ve placed a few of your larger picks or sprays in the top of the tree, you can add in your next style. Lay these alongside the other ones at the top of the tree, also using the greenery if necessary to secure them.

If you’ve chosen any Christmas florals for the tree topper as well, add these in at the base of the topper for a nice transition into the design of your tree.

Step Four: Making Adjustments

With the main picks and sprays arranged at the top of the tree, you can step back and see how the entire tree topper is balanced, making adjustments to the concentration of the picks and sprays, or to their height, as necessary.

Feel free to angle the stems of your picks, or the heads of your florals, as needed to create the impression that looks best.
