Not Your Typical Ride: What Distinguishes a Clown Bike?

The Hoppley clown circus bike 20 inch tires is only one of the odd bikes sold online by Unicycle.com.They have quite a few models but it is one of their more unique offerings.

It’s also very different from a conventional bicycle, and though any bike could in theory (and with the requisite skill) be used for trick riding) this one is uniquely situated to make trick riding more approachable.

What Sets This Circus Bike Apart from Other Bikes?

Probably the most significant difference between this circus bike and “conventional” bikes is the lack of a chain drive, but that difference is crucial.

With a “regular” bike, the chain drive offers a compounded mechanical advantage, not only enabling higher speeds, but enabling riders to ride for longer with less fatigue.

This is not only not necessary with a circus bike, but its very presence would serve as an unwelcome crutch. The crank arms communicate directly with the hub of the wheel in a circus bike, giving the rider significantly more leverage over the wheel and the bike than a chain drive would allow.

This enables much greater agility and control in tight situations, and also enables the rider to stop and start the bike on a dime, without the need for brakes. The muscle of the rider is all the brake that’s needed.

That being said, it is only one of the differences between circus bikes like this and other bikes.

Another significant difference between them is that this bike has wheels that spin 360 degrees in the frame of the bike, and independently of each other. This, like the lack of a chain drive, enables a much more precise degree of control and agility that would otherwise be possible. In a standard bike the rear wheel would be fixed in its bearing in the frame; this is not so with high-quality circus bikes.

Most quality circus bikes (like this one) will also come equipped with stunt pegs. This not only gives a single rider more flexibility with control, but also opens up the door should he or she like to try tandem trick riding, with another.

On top of these features, general high-quality construction, with a steel frame and durable aluminum sidewalls is necessary to withstand the rigors (and unplanned dismounts) of trick riding.

They’re just a few things of note, but at the end of the day they qualify performance and capability. This circus bike (with 20 inch tires) is just one of many, but any that reflects these features will likely perform similarly.
