Protecting Your Clothing from Light and Moisture Damage in the Long-Term

It’s not entirely unusual to spend several hundred dollars if not more on garments for special occasions. That figure can easily grow to several thousand for special, black-tie events.

That’s no small sum of money and the manner in which you care for and store your garments has the ability to protect your investment.

It is also important to remember that, like washing, storing, and transporting your garments properly will go a long way toward protecting the investment.

There are all sorts of garment bags, including hanging garment bags, leather garment bags, rolling garment bags, and a wide range of travel bags. So, whether you’re transporting your garments or storing them in the long or short term, here’s what you need to know.

Covering Your Garments While in Transit
While in transit and short term storage, the environmental factor that proves the greatest threat to most clothing is water.

Water absorption can cause leather clothing to crack, warp and swell, fur garments to malt, and can cause a myriad of problems in textiles woven of both natural and artificial fibers.

Moisture absorption can also foment the growth of mold and mildew, which will discolor fabrics, leave unsightly stains that are impossible to remove, and leave untoward, lingering odors.

This makes it vital to ensure that you are properly covering and securing your clothing while in transit or in long-term storage.

For this, a poly garment bag is best. Poly, or polyethylene, is light, thin, affordable, and waterproof. Some wholesale garment bags made of poly are also conveniently vented which allows any trapped moisture to escape, too.

These types of garment bags are also acceptable for short-term storage, too, since they are breathable.

Covering While in Storage
When it comes to long-term storage, the considerations flip just a bit, though the focus remains on protecting your garments from water damage.

In the long term, the same features of poly that make it agreeable for short-term travel make it unsuitable. That is, poly is waterproof.

When your clothing is covered in storage for the long term, you don’t necessarily need a waterproof bag; you need a bag that allows vapor to escape so it won’t become trapped and encourage mold and mildew to grow.

For this reason, cloth garment bags (which are breathable) are more suitable than poly garment bags.

Cloth garment bags also tend to be opaque, which also makes them perfect for protecting against light, which can fade and discolor garments in the long term.

Moreover, though cloth garment bags are not waterproof (necessarily), they are effective at preventing settling dust from damaging garments.

So, in the short term, use a poly garment bag, and in the long term, use a cloth garment bag. It’s just about that simple!
