RV Power Cords: What Are They and Why You Need Them

When you have your own RV, you want to make sure that everything is pristine and convenient. Every part of it needs to serve a purpose and needs to be functional. One important element that every RV requires is electricity. Electricity provides your mobile-friendly home with vital parts to make your RV life far more enjoyable and rewarding, such as lights, kitchen appliances, a water heater, and a refrigerator, among other things.

However, it’s also important to be able to use electrical appliances outside of the RV, such as when you are enjoying an outdoor campsite. Do you want to watch TV outside your RV? Or play video games? Or use a portable stove top? Or simply charge your phone while enjoying the great outdoors?

All of these options and far more are possible with the usage of RV power cords. But what do you need to know about these life-savers, and how do you find the right ones for you and your RV?

What are RV Power Cords?
RV power cords allow you to connect your RV to an outdoor power source. While at a campsite or another location, you can connect your rig to their electrical source. There, you can charge your battery and provide power to your outlets.

What Amps Are Available?
Depending on your RV, you need the right power cord for it. There are two power cords available: 30-amp and 50-amp. Finding the right wattages depends on your particular RV and its needs. As a rule of thumb, there are 120 volts in one amp.

In order to determine which one your RV needs, inspect its plug, which is located either inside the exterior door or on its outside. It’s quite easy to tell the difference between the two. The 30-amp is a three-pronged plug, while the 50-amp is a four-prong plug.

The RVs that take 30-amps is typical of smaller rigs and usually only have one air conditioner. RVs that take 50-amps, in contrast, are much larger and require more voltage. These rigs are typically much larger and have more appliances to fuel, such as washers and dryers, two or more air conditioners, etc.

Now it’s just a matter of ensuring that your plug can fit into the ones available at the campground. Most campgrounds provide both 30-amp and 50-amp plugs, but having an adapter ready to go is a great idea just in case.

What Lengths Are Available?
These seemingly minuscule yet extremely important pieces of equipment come in a few sizes that you should be aware of. They typically come in 18 inches, 25 feet, or 50 feet. For these, you can decide on your own which would be best for you and your RV.

You can also consider getting a power grip extender cord for these power cords. These are vital because power cords for RVs cannot be plugged into just any outlet. Outlets need to be RV-verified for you to use them. But, you should especially know to not ever use a dryer outlet. This could result in irreparable damage to your RV’s electrical system, but could also lead to a fire.

Utilize power grip extender cords to not only add length to the cord but also increase the safety of acquiring electricity for your RV.
