Should You Buy Polycotton or All Cotton Sweatshirts?

When it comes to buying clothes, not everyone pays extra attention to the details involved in the fabric and creation of them. More often than not, most people would simply prefer to choose and pick something that suits their style and aesthetic and is comfortable.

However, there are distinct differences in the look and feel of clothing that are mainly depending on the material that they’re manufactured with. In the case of cotton, a lot of clothes these days are no longer made with 100% cotton. Most have polyester mixed into them.

The question is, is a partly-cotton sweatshirt best suited for you? Or is it better to go with all cotton sweatshirts?

Let’s discuss…

What is Polyester?
The first thing we have to get out of the way is the definition of polyester. What, exactly, is polyester?

In a word, polyester is plastic.

It’s a petroleum-based plastic that was manufactured into thin long threads, which were then made into fabrics. They’re essentially no different from the plastic bottles you drink your soda from.

What Are the Differences Between All Cotton Sweatshirts, and Cotton-Polyester Ones?
There are a couple of distinct and important differences between 100% cotton and blended fabrics. These differences are sometimes important enough to take into consideration, especially if you’re particular about how clothes feel against your skin, or how breathable and absorbent they are.

That said, let’s look at some of the differences between all cotton sweatshirts and those with blended cotton and polyester.

Cotton is Hypoallergenic
One of the biggest benefits of going 100% cotton is that cotton is a naturally hypoallergenic material. This makes it less likely to cause any allergic reactions to the skin compared to other fabrics. Polyester, on the other hand, is by no means considered hypoallergenic. This means that blended fabrics are more likely to cause skin irritations and allergic reactions compared to 100% cotton. If you know that your skin is sensitive to this, then it’s best to stick with the cotton’s natural fibers.

Polyester is Lighter
That said, one advantage of cotton-polyester blends is that they’re much lighter compared to all cotton sweatshirts and clothing. If you end up soaking through them during a run or a workout, they won’t feel too heavy on your body and skin.

Cotton is Breathable
Nevertheless, 100% cotton is more breathable compared to blended fabrics. This is great if you’re living in a location with a warmer climate, as cotton’s natural breathability will better help you regulate and manage your body temperature.

Blended Fabrics Shrink & Wrinkle Less
One thing that distinguishes blended fabrics, though, is that because they’re part plastic, they shrink or wrinkle less compared to 100% cotton. This is one reason why a lot of athletic wear is made with a mix of both cotton and polyester.

That doesn’t mean, though, that cotton isn’t great for activewear. On the contrary, this next feature of cotton is what makes it suitable for workout:

Cotton is Absorbent
Cotton has the ability to soak up to over 25 times its weight in water. This is why it’s often used for bath towels. In fact, many luxurious towels are actually made from pure cotton. This absorbent feature of cotton is what makes it ideal for warmer climates. Because it’s so good at absorbing water, pure cotton fabrics are more effective at keeping your skin dry compared to polycotton fabrics.

All Cotton Sweatshirts Are the Way to Go
When it comes to sweatshirts, then, you want something to wear that can both keep you warm during colder climates, and is also breathable enough to help you regulate your body heat. You want something that feels soft and good to the skin, and won’t cause any skin irritations.
