Should You Drop a Scope or a Red Dot on Your G&G Raider?

The G&G Raider is one of the most popular AEGs on the market today and it’s easy to see why. It’s expandable, customizable, upgradeable, and affordable. There’s not much not to love.

So make sure, if you have one, that you’re pairing it with the right accessories to get the most out of it.

Case in point: optics.

There are probably plenty of airsoft players out there that have scopes on the rails of their G&G Raiders’ receivers. But should they be shooting over scopes?

Generally, we think not. Look, if you’re playing on a field where a lot of engagements take place over great distances and you need to use your AEG for sniping and not laying down suppressive fire, maybe a scope is the best way to go.

But the G&G Raider is a champ of CQB, and red dots are better for that. Here’s what you need to think about if you haven’t yet.

Why a Red Dot Is Better (Most of the Time)
While scopes are great for precision shot placement, they require you to line up a reticle, achieve the perfect eye relief, and skirt around parallax distortion.

When a red dot sight is properly sighted in, it’s free from all of those problems. In fact, red dot sights are some of the most reflexive sights in the industry. That’s why they’re sometimes even referred to as reflex sights. You point and shoot – literally.

Even if your mount is slightly off, if the red dot is sighted in properly, the point of aim should correspond to point of impact.

Also, red dot sights keep the sight picture clear. You don’t need to look through the tube of a scope, which shuts out some of the greater target picture.

With red dot sights, you can keep both eyes open, helping you boost your situational awareness (which can save you in an airsoft match) while also helping pare down the time it takes you to acquire a target in the first place.

Because of their reflexive nature, red dot sights make it much easier to send out a series of shots in rapid succession without needing to re-align a reticle. They can potentially help shooters make faster, more accurate follow-up shots.

Also, the fact that scopes offer magnification has its benefits, but in CQB, which you will encounter in airsoft sooner or later, scopes are more of a nuisance than a help. The lack of magnification with a red dot sight, and the ability to make reflexive shots, is a big advantage.

Also, while there are some low-light rated scopes, red dots are generally better in low light conditions or in the dark. Many also have variable brightness settings, too.

All in all, it’s time to reevaluate your choice of optics. If you’re shooting over an AEG like a G&G Combat Machine 16 Raider, it might be time to switch to a red dot sight.

Word to the Wise: Get Back Up Iron Sights, Too
One thing we have to offer you. Whether you shoot over a red dot or a scope, make sure you get back up iron sights.

They work in all conditions and the battery will never die. Do not be without them. That way, you can enjoy the benefits of a scope or a red dot sight with the piece of mind that you have a failsafe.
