Signs Your Plants Aren’t Getting Enough Light

Inadequate lighting is one of the biggest problems faced by indoor growers around the country, every year.

Fortunately, most of the time your plants will tell you something is wrong. If you’re attentive to it, you’ll be able to catch the issue and rectify it before you do any serious harm to the plant.

Maybe you just need some more powerful, 1000 watt LED grow lights, or an indoor grow tent with better reflectivity. Either way, here are some of the big signs your plants aren’t getting enough light.

Etiolation and Chlorosis

One of the most obvious signs that your plants aren’t getting enough light is chlorosis. This is a discoloration of the foliage, often browning but more often yellowing or fading.

Most of the time, chlorosis is caused by nitrogen deficiency, but if you’re sure the plant is getting adequate nutrition, the next most likely cause is inadequate light.

Etiolation, which is a general weakening of the plant, is another sign that it is not getting enough light.

Getting “Leggy”

Plants that don’t get enough light will become “leggy,” which means they will get wispy and drawn out,  more often than not stretching in the direction of the best available light.

If you see this happening, provide your plants with more light as soon as possible, as leggy plants are more likely to succumb to other diseases if the condition is not addressed.

The Plant Is Not Developing Symmetrically or Is Leaning

Plants that don’t get enough light often lean to one side, in some instances, they may not develop properly on the side that isn’t getting enough light, and put all their growth into the side that isn’t shaded. While insufficient light is not the only cause of a plant that is developing unevenly, it is a common one.

Foliage Is Small or Doesn’t Develop Properly

Another big sign of a plant that isn’t getting enough light is that, wherever new growth is present, it might be small or poorly formed. It may also be the case that new growth may remain light green instead of darkening to a mature green, as often happens. Also, if the foliage doesn’t get larger after budding, that’s a potential sign of inadequate light.

No New Growth

Plants that have adequate fertilization and which are maintained at the appropriate temperature and humidity levels should foliate, or blossom, if given enough light. If you are sure the other factors are in order and the plant isn’t growing, it is almost certainly a lack of light that is the problem.

Be certain to make sure of this before attempting to change anything, as a plant that is not given enough light will experience fertilizer burn if you continue to feed it without providing it with sufficient light.
