Skip the Thumb Studs, Get a Push Button Automatic Knife

Looking for a new knife to add to your collection, or want to refresh what you currently carry? Make it a push button automatic knife. This short post will cover some of the better reasons why you should.

What’s the Difference Between an Automatic Knife (an “Auto”) and a Conventional Pocket Knife?

The only real difference between a conventional pocket knife and a push button automatic knife has to do with how the blade deploys.

Conventional out-the-side pocket knives are usually deployed with thumb studs, thumb holes, or flipper tabs. Some models still use a nail nick, which usually requires two hands.

In a push button automatic knife, all you have to do to deploy the knife is push a button. That’s it.

They may have different lock mechanisms, but overall, they’re the same as other knives.

What Are OTS and OTF Knives?

In the world of knives, OTS stands for “out the side” and OTF stands for “out the front.” Many, but not all, automatic knives are OTF knives. There isn’t necessarily an advantage to one over the other; it’s mostly a matter of taste.

So, why should you upgrade your EDC knife to a push button auto?

Why a Push Button Automatic Knife?

The best advantage of a push button automatic knife is the fact that you can use it one handed – no buts.

Other pocket knives, even gravity knives and those with thumb studs and flippers, can be opened with one hand, but it takes a little bit of getting used to.

With a push button auto, there’s no learning curve. Just push the button – and it’s fast, as fast or faster than a standard pocket knife, even one with a flipper tab.

Another great thing about a push button automatic knife is that it’s possible that you can lock it closed. Most autos can be locked closed, which increases the safety when carrying one in a pocket.

They’re also tough and highly durable. While some models do require a bit more maintenance than typical pocket knives (because of the springs and moving parts) they’re a lot tougher than you might expect and can be put to hard use.

A push button automatic knife, thanks to its form factor, is also going to be fairly fidget friendly, too, making them a lot of fun to carry.

Also, there’s the cool factor. Push button automatic knives are dripping with them.
