The .50 BMG cartridge is a staple in the world of long-range shooting, and it has been for a long time. Not only does it have an extremely long effective range, but it also carries a lot of ballistic energy to the target, which is why it has been used in the military for a long time for anti-materiel applications.
This said, the .50 BMG produces an enormous amount of recoil. Even so, many modern extreme long-range rifle platforms, like the Cadex Defense CDX-50 TREMOR, are chambered in .50 BMG.
That justifiably might raise the issue in a shooter’s mind. Fortunately, there are 2 things to know about this platform that can help mitigate recoil.
Two Things to Know About Recoil Reduction
First, let’s understand what recoil really is. It’s the product of the bullet’s mass and how fast it’s moving when it leaves the barrel. The thing about .50 BMG is that it fires a ridiculously huge bullet and produces insane muzzle velocities, considering the bullet mass.
Conversely, the static mass of the rifle, which, for a bolt-action repeater like the Cadex Defense CDX-50 TREMOR is the whole thing, helps counteract the force of felt recoil.
Interestingly enough, many extreme long-range rifle platforms chambered in .50 BMG are very heavy, to the effect that muzzle blast more than felt recoil is a hindrance to the enjoyment of shooting at the range.
That is generally the case here, as the Cadex Defense CDX-50 TREMOR is a very heavy rifle. Depending on specifications, the rifle weighs between 22.7 and 24.7 pounds. That’s more than enough to absorb much of the recoil of the .50 caliber.
There is another thing to keep in mind here, and it’s that this Cadex Defense platform comes with a brake-ready, threaded muzzle.
Adding a muzzle brake compatible with the barrel can be the most important step you take to reducing recoil; a muzzle brake can significantly reduce felt recoil without adversely affecting the ballistic performance of the cartridge.
If you’re not familiar, they do this by changing the manner in which gasses are ported at the muzzle, redirecting the force of felt recoil.
Between the mass of the rifle and the fact that you can add a muzzle brake, you’d actually be surprised how (relatively) little recoil this rifle generates.
A Note on This Extreme Long-Range Rifle?
Just in case you’re a fan of the Cadex Defense CDX-50 TREMOR but don’t want an ELR rifle chambered in .50 BMG, this platform is also available in .416 Barrett. All the same, many choose rifles chambered in .50 BMG not just because it has been used forever, but because even though it’s expensive, it’s not impossible to find at gun shops.
