The Kizer Begleiter Fixed Blade Is the Knife You Need to Add to Your Collection This Year

The Kizer Begleiter – the folding version (which is now available with a button lock) – is one of the most popular folding knives on the market, and it has been for some time now, more than a few years.

But the Begleiter is not just a folder anymore. Kizer has released a fixed Begleiter that offers so much more than the folding version. Here are a few things we love about it, along with why you should definitely add one to your collection this year.

What We Love About the Kizer Begleiter Fixed Blade

First, let’s set the tone. There are things about the fixed Kizer Begleiter that are radically different from the folding version (though that should be no surprise).

Most importantly, the fixed Begleiter has more of a leaf-shaped blade with a bit more width near the tip, as compared to the standard folder, which has more of a straight back and a finer point.

That aside, there are many things we love about the fixed Kizer Begleiter that the folder version doesn’t offer.

Let’s start with the obvious. There is no lock, so there is no lock to fail. This knife will appeal to those die-hards who refer to folders as “pre-broken” knives. Love it or not, a pivot point is a weak point and an instance of design complexity that is a prime opportunity for failure.

So that is something to love. You will need to carry a sheath, but the sheath that comes with this one is a great one. It’s a thermoplastic sheath that offers excellent retention and lots of flexibility with respect to how you carry.

The fixed Begleiter also has an ergonomic, comfortable handle with micarta scales that offer a sure grip and requires very little maintenance.

Now let’s look at the blade, which offers a slightly different profile (as described) and which is made from D2. This is not a mark against the folding Begleiters (many of them are made with super steel blades) but D2 is a very tough tool steel that can take an excellent edge and which will absorb a lot of abuse.

The spine also sports aggressive jimping that assures a solid grip even in adverse conditions, and the length and stock of the blade are ideal not just for light camp work but for the most demanding chores.

For anyone that’s a Kizer fan, or more specifically, a Begleiter fan, but whose heart belongs to fixed blades, or for anyone that carries a fixed blade for EDC, the fixed Kizer Begleiter is an excellent choice, and a knife that you should definitely add to your collection.
