Things We Have To Look Out For When Buying Botanical Skincare Products

Take a good look at the labels of your skincare products and see if you can eat them without worrying if you might get poisoned from ingesting them. If it’s not possible, then why would you intentionally put them on your skin?

Botanical skincare products are made with ingredients you can eat without harming animals to produce them. And because these are plant-based products, they are not only safe for human consumption, they’re also environmentally friendly. Naturally speaking, the human body easily responds to all-natural botanical products as opposed to synthetic ingredients. This is due to the fact that plants are naturally packed with antioxidants that include vitamins, polyphenols, carotenoids, and other really useful natural compounds that help shield plants from the damaging effect of free radicals.

However, because of the considerable amount of companies selling “clean beauty,” many of us are already confused with the terminologies and what they actually mean such as organic, green, clean, vegan, cruelty-free, and fair-trade. An important thing to remember though, to consider a botanical skincare product “natural” or “clean”, make sure that these products do not carry sneaky harmful ingredients that somehow found their way in most products that are already on your shelves.

Silicones + Petroleum Based Ingredients
Silicones and petroleum-based ingredients are easily non-biodegradable. While these ingredients are invisible to the naked eye, they are actually massively harmful to the environment. They often go by various names such as dimethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane, dimethylsilanediol for common silicone ingredients and paraffin wax, mineral oil, nylon, polyethylene glycol for petroleum-based ingredients.

Ethoxylated Ingredients
1,4 Dioxane is a by-product of ethoxylation, a carcinogen, and nerve toxin. Ethoxylation is a process that involves adding ethylene oxide to get a surfactant that creates foaming, cleansing, and/ or solvent properties. When it comes to skin and hair care products, it is almost reasonably hard to fin formulations that are ethoxylate-free since they are the go-to ingredient that contributes to the foaming of the product leaving anyone who uses them feeling super clean.

Reef Harming Chemical Sunscreen
Sunscreen products are meant to be used for the rest of someone’s life. For that reason, companies making and selling these products should thoroughly test the ingredients used to make them. The chemicals oxybenzone and octinoxate are the two most common chemicals used to create sunscreens. These are known to have harmful effects on ocean reefs and are now even banned in the U.S. and countries around the world.

Not Cruelty-Free
When we see the mark “cruelty-free” on all of our skincare products, it’s safe to say that no adorable bunnies and other living animals were harmed in finalizing the formulation of the product. Animal testing is not the only way to be certain that a product is safe for humans. There is a combination of methods that cruelty-free companies use to ensure the safety of products.
