Understanding the Types of Electric Wire and Cable Sold by Copper Wire Suppliers

Fundamentally, electric wire and cable all do the same thing. They carry current to power a process, or a signal to be used for communication.

But, electric wire suppliers sell a wide range of different types of electric conductors that are used for many different uses. This short post will cover some of the types of general and specialty types of electric wire and cable sold by copper wire suppliers.

General Purpose, 600 Volt Wire (Building Wire)

General purpose 600 volt wire is used for a wide range of residential and commercial applications, for interior power distribution and powering appliances. It is usually made from copper and insulated with either nylon or polyethylene insulation. Where polyethylene is used, it is usually XLPE, or cross-linked polyethylene, used for its general durability.

Aluminum Triplex or Quadruplex Wire

Aluminum triplex and quadruplex wire are used for power service entry to buildings. These types of aluminum wire are more cost-effective and far more lightweight than copper alternatives, and may be rated either for aerial installation or for subterranean service entry. Even though they are made from aluminum, many copper wire suppliers carry them.

Bare Copper Wire

Bare copper wire is another type of electrical wire and cable sold by specialists, and it is commonly used as a ground. It is more cost-effective than insulated wire since that step and expense can be skipped.

Instrumentation and Alarm Cable

Instrumentation and alarm cable constitute a class of low-voltage cables used to power and transmit signals in instrumentation and alarm circuits. They can be used for CCTV systems, burglar alarm systems, fire alarm systems, and more.

Submersible Pump Cable

Submersible pump cable is a special type of cable that is rated for installation in wet environments, and is commonly used to wire well pumps and for other similar applications.

DLO Cable

DLO cable, or diesel locomotive cable, is a special type of electrical cable used to transfer power from the electrical generators used on diesel locomotives. It is a thick, heavy cable with a high voltage rating, often 2000 volts.

Armored Cable

Armored cable is protected by interlocking rings of steel sheathing, over the top of the common insulation used to protect the cables underneath. It is commonly used in agricultural and industrial installations, such as in mining, and must exhibit a high degree of physical durability and chemical resilience.

Tray Cable

Tray cable is cable that is intended to be installed in trays, rather than drawn through conduit. It must be appropriately rated for such infrastructure. Nonetheless, there are many advantages to tray cable as opposed to conduit, making this type of cable appealing in some situations.

Battery Cable

Battery cable is cable used for battery leads. Typically it is made of very finely stranded conductors which keeps it flexible. Some grades, like marine battery cable, sport individually tinned conductors which protect against corrosion.

Solar Panel Cable

Solar panel cable is a special type of electrical cable made with insulation that resists sunlight and weathering.

Welding Cable

Like battery cable, welding cable tends to have a high conductor count so that it remains flexible. It also must be made with an insulative jacket that resists chemical influences and abrasion.
