Here’s the good news. If your jungle boots get wet, there’s no need to panic. Jungle boots are literally made for this since they are made (typically) with vented ballistic nylon uppers (or some other synthetic) that is designed to breathe and dry off efficiently. But you still need to know what to do to prevent your boots from getting moldy and mildewy. Here’s your primer.
When Your Jungle Boots Get Wet
Before we get into how to dry off your jungle boots, let’s take a quick look at why you should be judicious about doing so in the first place.
If you leave your boots wet, they will eventually develop mold or mildew which will damage the boots and cause them to fall apart prematurely. And, even if that were not the case, your boots will smell pretty bad after a day of being damp. Leave alone the fact that wearing wet or even damp boots is a miserable experience. So, yes, it’s a good idea to know how to dry them off properly. Let’s look at how to do that.
If you take a tumble into the drink and come up with a pair of absolutely sopping jungle boots, or even if you’ve just been in the field and your boots are all dewy, here’s what you need to remember (and do) to get your boots dry properly.
First, you need to get your boots off and out of humid conditions. They are not going to dry fully as long as you are wearing them, especially if you are wearing socks. So get your boots and socks off, hang up your socks, change into something more comfortable, and get your boots out of the humidity. They may get mostly dry in humid conditions but never fully dry off.
One other criterion you should apply to your selection of a location where you can dry off your boots is that it should have good airflow. That will help them dry off faster.
A boot dryer will help, but if you don’t have a boot dryer, you can use dry packing paper or newsprint to dry off your boots. Remove your jungle boots’ laces, crumple up the paper, stuff it into the boots, and place them somewhere cool and dry with plenty of airflow.
In a few hours, check them. The paper in your boots should be pretty wet. Remove it, because as long as you leave it, the boots won’t dry off properly. Once you remove the old paper, crumple up some new paper and replace it in your boots.
Repeat this process a few times until the newspaper comes out dry, and your boots are dry as well. The good news is that jungle boots are vented so they tend to dry off quickly.
The other thing you can do, if you have dry, sunny conditions, is place your boots in the sun. For a short term drying, this should work just fine. This is not something you should do with leather boots, but since the synthetic uppers of jungle boots are more forgiving, you can dry them off a little more quickly than you could with leather.
