Why a .300 Blackout Build Kit Is Worth the Investment in Money and Time

Even though the majority of AR builds in this country are chambered around 5.56 (or perhaps .223 or .223 Wylde) there is a growing portion of shooters that are enamored with alternative cartridges. One of these is .300 Blackout, which offers some serious advantages over the former two.

This post will look at some of the reasons that a .300 Blackout built kit might offer you more value than a completed rifle, as well as where the cartridge wins out over 5.56.

It’s Twofold

The first half of the value of a .300 Blackout build kit actually has nothing to do with the build kit and everything to do with the chambering. The other half is specific to a build kit.

Why .300 Blackout?

  • Better stopping power. No matter how you look at it, .300 Blackout offers considerably more stopping power than 5.56 or .223. This makes it patently better for defensive builds, especially at close engagements. The only real drawback is the limited range, but considering the fact that most defensive engagements only occur at a few paces, this is moot.
  • Most 5.56 parts are interchangeable. If you get a .300 Blackout build kit, you will still be able to use a whole bunch of 5.56 parts if you want.
  • Better performance from a shorter barrel. The 5.56 and .223 do not perform well from shorter barrels, but .300 BLK does, making it ideal for carbines, SBRs, and even ARPs.
  • Better performance suppressed. Not that other cartridges don’t perform well suppressed, but .300 BLK definitely does.

Why a Build Kit?

  • Skirt shortages. You might walk into a gun shop and not see what you want. If you get a .300 Blackout build kit, you won’t be limited by these conditions.
  • Build exactly what you want. If you buy a rifle off the shelf, you’ll be getting what comes from the factory. Perhaps a few features will be customizable but by and large you have to either take it or leave it.
  • You can customize along the way. A .300 Blackout build kit, like any rifle build kit, offers flexibility. If you want to make changes to things like the barrel or handguard or muzzle device or BCG, you can do that a lot more easily and potentially cost-effectively with a build kit
  • You’ll learn more about how the rifle works. It’s impossible to assemble a fully functioning rifle without learning a thing or two about its operation, which makes assembly a highly educational process as well.
  • If you ever have to make repairs or upgrades you’ll know what to do. One of the main reasons to invest in a rifle build kit (regardless of caliber) is that by putting a rifle together, you won’t be able to help but learn how it all works. The consequence of this is that when you need to make repairs it will be easy to do so.
  • Pride of ownership and enjoyment. No matter how you look at it, it’s a lot of fun to assemble a rifle from a build kit. This makes it a really great project for shooters that like to work with their hands.
